Acceptable Username or Politically Incorrect?

    An acquaintance of mine set up an account on another forum. His username was "Josef Fritzl" (in fact he might have set up one with the same name on this forum). On the other forum, however, many users found the name offensive and demanded that it be changed or they would stop using the forum. The administrator caved under pressure and changed his name to "joseff".

    Would you find the name offensive, or do you feel people are overreacting? Personally, I would not want any attachment to the Austrian man, but I can understand why he chose it (he was using his dark humour to provoke a response, which he got). I wouldn't operate under the name, but wouldn't be offended to the degree where I would threaten to stop using the forum.

    What about you? What do you think?

    It is offensive, Fritzl was a ****ing bastard who should be hanged for what he did, but it depends on the forum I guess.

    I'd automatically think the user was about 15 but I wouldn't care too much or complain about it.

    Not sure that the boardsie with that name was going for dark or funny. Think that it's his real name.

    Meh, people are always using the net to get a reponse out of others; it's become a haven for aging adolescents looking to 'rock the boat' with their 'sense of humour'. I'll admit that the Joseff example is in poor taste but everyone's entitled to their own choices.

    I think had those users simply ignored everything your mate said, he would have left. Most people require some degree of attention from others in order to feel validated, and when they don't get such basic acknowledgment, they get annoyed, depressed, etc.

    Sadly, most people can't help but engage and start an argument. Look at all those youtube comment warriors, what a waste of time and yet, they can't help but quote each other and spin their tyres in the mud as if they're going to get something out of the whole exchange.

    It's OK on some, bad on others.

    I mean, on something like MomLogic.com I would not expect to see it, but if it was removed from this forum I would be disturbed by the communities lack of tolerance for joking. That said, if someone with that username was to post in parenting I would not be disturbed for them to be banned.

    It's really dependant on the forum in question whether such a name will be acceptable to the community at large.

    I wouldn't threaten to boycott a forum because one member picked a name I didn't like. I would however assume the user was an idiot and wouldn't respond to any thread he started. I really don't get why anyone would want to be associated with someone as evil as Josef Fritzl. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it though.

    Actually the control one doesn't work! However the insert and shift ones do.
