UK Freeview reception in the south?

What is the UK freeview reception like in the Republic?

I live just north of Catlerea in County Roscommon, I know people used to be able to pick up the BBC years ago with real high aerials, but can UK freeview be received in many parts of the south?

What are my chances of getting a decent set up and receving UK Freeview?

As a northerner I'm probably not best qualified to advise you but having scanned this forum for a few years now I would make a few points:
    (1) Divis (Belfast) is highest powered DTT transmitter in NI and can be received across the border with reasonable high gain aerial and masthead amp although methinks Roscommon is a bit too far south west to get decent reception but you could still try. At DSO (2012) power will be juiced up considerably and then you may have a reasonable chance of picking it up.
    (2) Brougher Mountain (Co. Tyrone) is nearest UK DTT transmitter to you but is on lower power and unlikely to yield decent picture.
    (3) Freeview from Welsh DTT transmitters is picked up along the eastern seaboard but I would think is virtually impossible in the west.
    (4) Personally if I were you I would invest in Freesat (most but not all channels presently on Freeview) with perfect reception almost certainly guaranteed or I would wait until 2012 and see what happens then when main NI DTT transmitters will be increased in power and relays near the border will carry some of the Freeview channels albeit at lower power.

Brougher Mountain is much closer than Divis, and share some of the allocations. It will be Brougher Mountain or nothing in Roscommon.

When the six counties switch off their analogue service, then the freeview channels will come in much stronger. But you'll probably get nothing in the area you're in unless there are neighbours and locals already picking up NI stations on big aerials direct from Brougher Mountain in Co. Fermanagh.

I'd say Freesat would be your best bet to get all the UK channels without going to large expense.
