    Hi,

Can anyone tell me what all the technical specs that are with aerials mean and where and why different aerials are used.

    For example:

There are yagis, unix, grids, log periodics etc etc. They all have different figures for forward gain, f/b ratio, beam width etc etc.

What do the different figures mean and why so many different types.

Is there an aerial that is a general useful for most houses etc etc.

This website should answer your questions http://www.aerialsandtv.com/aerials.html#TypesOfAerial

In Ireland some homes require one UHF aerial or one UHF and one VHF aerial for television reception depending on your nearest transmitter.
If your local transmitter broadcasts all four channels in UHF one Group W (wideband aerial) will suffice although Group specific (A, B, C/D) UHF aerials are recommended.
If your local transmitter broadcasts the four Irish channels in the VHF and UHF band two aerials will be required.
