I think if your buying them from the US you must sign a contract on AT&T, and "i think" you need the american equivalent of a PPS (think its called a social security number),so your aunt cant buy it in the US on contract, but if she was to get the phone sim-free, it would work on Irish 3G bands, and 2G/Edge bands, network dependent(think they have Edge on o2). Your best bet would be to wait here/or head up North (where it might work out cheaper, but there wouldn't be much difference.

You can get them sim free but I am not sure the price is much cheaper than here. At most you will save a little on the tax and currency difference.

where have you seen them sim free? in the USA you have to sign up to a 18 month contract with AT&T and to sign a contract they require your SSN (social security number).

you cannot get iphone in the states sim free.

initially on launch of iphone you can only get them by signing into a contract.

when the stock levels increase, they allow AT&T and apple retail stores to sell an 'contract-free' (note the two words here they are important), it's basically the same as PAYG here but you don't sign into a specific iphone plan, you can use any AT&T plan (including their PAYG plan) but the phone remains LOCKED to their network.

If you're willing to settle for the 3GS you can get it on Craigslist for around $250 easily now, even $200 if you push it. A good portion of them are already jailbroken and unlocked so those would work back here.

Iphone 4s are in short supply in the US, there's a 2 week waiting period at least.

Went into AT&T the other day and the guy laughed at me when I asked for one. He said their stock lasts max 5 hours before its sold out.

Anyways they go for 200 dollars but you need a social security number, a good credit rating, an American address and sign up for a 2 year contract (min 55 a month ex. tax)
If you don't have a credit rating ya have to pay a 500 dollar deposit on top of the 200, which you get back after the first year.

Theres a minimum of 1 months wait before you can cancel the contract and that costs 325dollars (increased from 175 on July 1st), which is taken from your deposit, but either way your still locked to AT&T and the only way to unlock is to jailbreak.
Not sure if you get the remainder of your deposit back immediately or at the end of the year tho.

TBH id wait for it to come out on 02. Save a lot of hassle and heartache making and breaking contracts and it will still cost 580 ex. tax (another 60 or so)

These guys have really cracked down on contract breakers so expect no help when trying to get the remainder of your deposit back. But if you really want it then go for it, Iphone 4s really are a cracking bit of tech!

Should this not be stickied? How many times a week does the same question get asked?

Basically buying from the US is virtually impossible without going on contract.

Try Canada who sell Sim free.

Had looked at canada. Its a small bit cheaper

Maybe it was just contract free. I was in best buy in San Francisco a few weeks back buying a cheapy Net10 phone to use over there. Someone came in and asked about the Iphone 4 without a contract and was told it would be in the next few weeks but you could get the 3gs. I thought they were talking sim free but maybe they just meant on a pay as you go service.

suffice to say it didn't get many replies and wasn't stickied, might be one of those questions that will always be asked whether there's a sticky or not.
