Can someone give me an overview of the advantages of doing this. It seems to me that if you then have a sim card for any network you can just pop it in and connect.

if you had 3 sims, O2/3/Vodaphone for instance wouldn't you then have three accounts to keep active all the time (costly) ??

No that would be a silly, most people would unlock their modem to move providers if their service was bad, they found a better deal or wanted to use the modem outside ireland while on holidays. If your happy with your provider it's pointless unlocking your modem.
All the networks do pay as you go broadband so when your out of credit, don't top up the modem and it won't be costing you anything.

You'd do it for the same reasons you'd unlock your phone.
