Is it a good idea to leave some cotton wool out in my back garden for the house sparrows to collect for their nest?

I haven't actually come across anything against this but my instinct would ne not to leave it out. The fibres are very fine and small feet could get caught in it. I'd stick to the natural materials available locally like mosss, dog hair, etc.
That said I've come across all kinds of materials in bird nests.

when I shear my hair I always leave the hair outside, for use as nest building material:D
