Would anyone know where I could source reasonable priced BMW genuine parts..... I've been quoted 557 euro (ex 13.5% VAT) for a rear bumper. A bit Irish me thinks.....

I have no problem taking a trip up the North if needs be.

Bumpers are expensive enough, you will save a few bobs in the north, but nothing exceptional.
Your best bet is to buy a used one. Plenty of guys braking cars in the country.
What car is it? And what model do you need, M Tech or not?

Try Otto in tallaght or schmiedmann.de

Give fleabay a try too. Plenty of breakers on there.

    Try www.partfinder.ie

You may find exactly what you're looking for there at a fraction of that price!

Thanks for the comments so far.

To be fair, I think new parts is the only way I can go here (accident which was my fault).

I went on to schmiedmann.com and input both BMW part numbers (51127141053 and 51127058467). Price? All in for 643.17 (including VAT and Shipping).

    That 643.17 vs 802.92!!!

And I'd say I could do better up the north.

the bumpers and trim are relatively expensive in both markets but are a bit cheaper in the UK and up north.

best bet is to ring the northern dealers and price the parts with their parts department.

Anything that I can save is money in my pocket! However, I will not be ripped off. I entend to ring around tomorrow.

dont forget to factor in the travel cost and the cost for taking a day off work too if required.

what car is it for btw?

I've thought of all that. 25 quid would get me up and down to Belfast. Have holidays to take so cost of taking a day off work is not an issue.

    Car is a BMW 320 petrol - 2006.

I am curious to see how much would a dealer up north ask for this.
    Keep us posted.

you could pick up a second hand bumper, and get it resprayed or you could be lucky and it will be the same colour already.

might be good time to upgrade to an M-Sport rear bumper if your running an SE or ES spec car.

agh right, sounds like you rear ended somebody and your paying for the damage?
just make sure the bumber bar and mounting brackets are ok so you dont buy the new bumper to find out it wont sit properly.

100% correct. From the quote I got from the owner, all is needed is a rear bumper and a reinforcement panel. It appears that everything else is ok.

If you source the part yourself they will almost certainly be supplied unpainted. So you will have to factor in this cost as well, plus the labour involved in removing the old one and replacing with new.

Does the quote supplied by the owner include painting and installation?

Yep, I'm aware of what your saying. The quote I got includes labour etc. However the prices I quoted here are ex labour etc.

I don't get it, if you are paying with your own money, why don't you call a few breakers? I got mine from a breaker, in perfect condition, just needed to get it painted (Well with the obvious sanding, prep etc..)
I paid 1/3 of the price of a new, and it looks brand new. No clip was broken, nothing.

Because the car belongs to a third party?

My point exactly, since this thing is not going through the insurance, why would you pay premium? Otherwise just go through the insurance.
Just get the bumper used, painted and all and ask the 3rd party to come in the garage so it gets replaced.

because the 3rd part has final say in wether they allow you to get second hand parts for their car. if it was a banger os something i'd allow it but if somebody hit my mint 2001 S3 i wouldnt accept second hand parts unless i sourced them myself.

In my experience dealers are 20-25% cheaper for parts up north, i use David Prentice Portadown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60 ✭✭shanemc1

I know it's not what your looking for but as a comparison €270 +Vat (Retail) for a spurious bumper. You have to bear in mind with a second hand bumper that there may be extra labour cost's involved for preping it as going on the part number you quoted that is a pre-primed bumper from BMW.

i buy all my parts in david prentice bmw portadown, saved 360 euro on discs, pads, and inlet manifold compared to southern dealer, live in louth so not too far away + they open until 1 or 2 on saturdays

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,123 ✭✭✭stepbar

I gave a dealer in Belfast a call today. Price came in about 50eur cheaper than price on quote. So I mite try prentice in morning. Otherwise I'm going to order the parts in Germany and get labour done here.

Louth here too, Portadown is about 10 minutes further away from me than Kells is so its definitely worth the effort.

Shame Portadown doesn't have a receptionist like in Kells, hot damn... :pac:

Try Border Motor Works in Strabane.
They're an independent place specialising in BMWs. I've used them before and have had no issues with them.

Just a wee update on this for those who are interested.....

Finally got the ball rolling this morning. I rang about 5 places.....

    1. McKeon Motors in Kells. Voicemail....."We are closed" yada yada yada..... Not a great start and it 10 am in the morning..... Rang a half hour later.... voicemail still on

    2. N Conlon & Sons, Rathangan. Price all in 650eur. The chap even offered 15% discount straight up without asking. Impressed by that. Very professional outfit. Would recommend if you couldn't be arsed driving up the north.

    3. Bavarian BMW in Belfast. No answer.

    4. Murphy & Gunn (the people who are doing the work use these guys). Joke of a price..... 800 + VAT (which he quoted as 21.5% but I think it should be 13.5???)..... Not interested in haggling. Bye bye

    5. David Prentice in Portadown. I got a price from these guys back on Monday. I think the original price was 560 pounds inc VAT. Haggled it to 476 pounds which is about 566 eur all in. Bought the parts there and then.

So all in all.... I saved a whopping 342 or 406 euro (depending on what VAT rate you use). Now, I don't care what anyone says but a difference of c300 - 400 euro is absolutely outrageous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Fair play, they always do a good deal up in Prentice's. Nice drive up to, just try not to get stuck behind a truck. :)

But - difference between €650 and €566 is only €84, no?

I'm with you on Conlans. I posted a review of them some time ago. Excellent to deal with and threw in plenty of stuff last time I got the e39 serviced there.

The 650 quote from Conlan, was that inclusive of the 15%? Otherwise its c. 552 which is cheaper than what you paid in the north.

I have to say that I have no problem throwing tax euro at UK these days but I'd definitely support a dealer that has demonstrated a cusmtomer focus.

    Cheers,

No vat rate is 21.5% - its 21% now and has been since January

There is some 2/3rd rule, something like if the cost of materials are 2/3 plus of the total cost then you charge 21% rather than 13.5%

    Don't think you'll get McKeon's :(

Try http://www.smpcars.com/. We had someone breakdown around that area in a 5 Series and found out by accident they are an authorised BMW service centre - presume they supply parts as well.

They were incredibly helpful and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Have been following this with interest as i used to work in a BMW Garage.. Nothing was more annoying than people who over exaggerate the difference!!

Just a few points on this!

    1. Are you sure the 800 was + vat? The 650 + the 15% you got off is €770 or so, factor in a difference in vat calculation and its on par? I just rang these with the same pat numbers and got €795 inc vat? (conlons offered me no discount- i feel left out now :p)

    2. Vat on Car Parts bought over the counter is 21% - 13.5% is used when there is a labour element

    3. Why didn't you get the garage that is doing the work to source the parts? Trade discount is 15% in most places so you would have actually saved money because they'd charge 13.5% on the total invoice rather than the you paying 21% on parts & 13.5% on labour.. Savng another 6.5% or so

    4. Your exchange rate of '£476 which is about €566' Have you an actual figure you were charged in €

    5. The vat rate difference between UK & IE is 3.5% currently.. So take the Irish price of €650 - 3.5% - €627 or so. Difference of €60 using your exchange rate

€20 for petrol up and back, €4 for tolls and the difference is not as bad as first made out!

    @Rev2.0

The differenece doesn't need to be exaggerated in fairness. It's a schism.
