My title does not really express my query, sorry about that....I have a toshiba laptop, im using it at home to run my own small business, and I have a lot of sessions open. I want to be able to open my lapito adn start working straight away, and not have to open the pages one by one, so what I have been doing is simply closing the lid of the laptop, which I understand puts the laptop to sleep....so my question is, is this OK to do on a regular basis, ie Im not harming the computer on a long term basis by doing this am I?

No, but you will have to restart the computer from time to time, not doing so will eventually slow the computer down.

And, as far as I know, it'll still use a significant amount of power.

sleep mode still keeps your session suspended in RAM and in order to do that it needs to pass constant current across the ram, so yes it does consume power though its typically negligible unless you go to sleep at a low battery level.

ultimately its the same as leaving your computer on as far as the computer is concerned. Eventually you will want to restart your pc to give it time to install updates and clear any artefacting. artefacting is what can happen over time, it basically is crap memory data left over when programs are done running. restarting the computer and wiping the ram is the best and sometimes only way to flush that kind of clutter. restarting also cleans up a bunch of other temp-stuff... its a good idea to restart on a regular basis/shut down overnight.

not restarting the computer in the long term can lead to unusual errors, but should not result in permanent damage. and if it does result in software-related damage, its quite rare.
