Beating victim back in N. Ireland: 'I gave her a great big hug'
For nearly three months, all Bernadette McShane could do was worry and wait from her home in Northern Ireland for any word about her granddaughter Natasha McShane, who was brutally beaten with a baseball bat in Bucktown.

This weekend, Natasha finally returned home. And Bernadette McShane was able to see her oldest grandchild's face light up into a smile and her eyes tear up as the young woman struggled to say "Granny."

"She done her best to say it...It was lovely to see her again, I gave her a great big hug," Bernadette McShane said in a telephone interview from South Armagh. "I couldn't explain how happy I am. She was very excited looking."
After six weeks of rehabilitation, the graduate exchange student was released from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago on Friday. She flew out of Midway Airport with her parents and sister, who have been at her bedside since she was attacked with a friend in April. Medical personnel were also on board.

The Irish/ Irish-American community of Chicago really rallied around Natasha and her family. There were several large fund raisers organised around the city, with several thousand people in attendance in total.

He is hoping that Natasha recovers fully from this heinous crime.

    Hope she recovers fully,
Sounds like she's had a pretty rough time over the last few months.

I kinda hope they go to jail.

They were both sent to jail after they were discovered trying to use the other victim's credit card at a local petrol station.

He refused to post bond and stayed in Cook County Jail where he has been a resident on 17 other occasions. He is safer in the general population that he would be out on the street after this cowardly crime,

I am friends with a dozen or so of the guards at County. They made sure that they made him aware that they knew him and what he had done. He barely batted an eye. He is just a gutless P.O.S. gang member and a scourge on the tax payers of Illinois.

He'll get his back if he is ever back on the streets. I wouldn't expect that to be anytime in the next 20 years due to the high visibility of his crimes.

Any word on her long term prognosis?

She has a very long road ahead of her. Very simple tasks that we wouldn't think twice about are very hard for her.

She currently has a section of her skull being kept in her abdomen that is mentioned in the article.

The McShane family is going to need a lot of support in the very near future.
