New VW Polo GTi not coming to Ireland

After asking VW Ireland about the launch date and expected cost of the new Polo GTi, I've just heard from them that there are no plans to bring it to Ireland at all. Quite disappointing!

    Here's what they said...

"At present, there are no plans to introduce the Polo GTI in the Irish market. This is due to a number of factors including market conditions and CO₂ legislation. Currently we believe that the VRT legislation as it stands will push the price too high in comparison to standard Polo models and therefore lead to a low level demand for the model.

Market conditions and demand are continuously monitored for opportunities to introduce new models. In November of this year, we will be planning for 2011. It may be decided at this stage that the Polo GTI does have potential in the Irish market and it may then be introduced. Therefore, if you are still interested towards the end of this year you should keep an eye on the Volkswagen website which is constantly updated with information on new models. With regard to monitoring demand for the Polo GTI, your email has now been logged as interest in this model."

One fact that makes this Polo GTI extraordinary is that along with its performance features, it is the most fuel-efficient and lowest emitting GTI ever. It has a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of only 139 g/km. By comparison, its direct predecessor, which was also equipped with a 180 PS 1.8-litre turbo engine, consumed 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers (equivalent to 188 g/km CO2).

Selling Renaults for years and we found it impossible to sell Clio 172s Megane 225s etc etc .... and they're the best in class. Theres just no point bringing that car to Ireland. Sure car lovers on here and everywhere will say its awful that its not coming but not many people who say this will go and buy one either ;)

I wonder why? The Irish inflated price might be a reason!

The Golf Gti seems to do pretty well though...i think a little brother for it wouldn't do so bad either

It's the cleanest gti you could ask for!

It's up on the VW UK site so it's coming in RHD.

Roughly €22,500 ex. VRT based on the UK price

€4,500 wouldn't be far off the mark for that I'd say so around €27,000 for an ex. works price, and that is around the cost of a Cooper S.

Stange decision by VW Ireland IMHO. They don't even need to physically import them, just list them for sale as special order (like more or less everything they sell at the moment).

What I don't understand is why VW don't react to the OP and offer to order one for him or for anyone else who wants one. Granted the market isn't huge but nobody is asking them to spend a fortune on advertising the Polo GTi either.

Cars like the GTi give the brand a good image, I personally always had a soft spot for VW from my youth when a neighbour had a Golf 1 GTi and a friend of my fathers had a Scirocco. Bad show on VW Irelands part and blaming it on the CO2 emissions seems lazy.

Now that is a bit odd that they don't offer it here.

Thats because Fritz and the gang havent suffered from the same level of economic problems that we have. Just like it was here for 10 odd years, the Germans have more money in their pockets at the moment than most so they're being asked to pay more for their cars....simple really

In fairness, the car keithclancy linked to has leather, sat nav, bi-xenons, 7spd automatic, climate etc.

The 7spd DSG auto box is standard...only gearbox available, which is kinda crappy!

Why would they inflate the price of the Polo GTI and not the normal Polo?

When you say inflated price, what are you referring to exactly?

139g/KM puts it in band B, 16% VRT instead of 14%. Shouldn't make that much of a difference.

There was no market for these cars before the VRT change and there'll be no market now.

It's a terrible pity, but the Irish will inevitably choose the biggest car possible with the cheapest motor tax over anything exciting or interesting.

I would rather an old mark II golf tbh nicer, but I don't like many newer cars tbh.

Really didn't think I would, but I like it!

Only reason I can think VW are not going to sell it here is because they must be afraid it will take away from some potential golf GTi sales?? ...because visually they are very similar?? The vrt argument doesn't add up as someone else already pointed out by doing the math

Great looking car, I've been waiting for this to arrive as well. The last version was sold here so I'd guess the new one will be here in 2011. It's only just been released in Germany.... patience.

Hope you're right. If you're seriously interested in buying one you should register your interest with VW Ireland...the more interest the see in it, the more likely they'll bring it over!

Could you buy it in the UK and bring it over? If you spoke to an Irish dealer about servicing etc I don't see how they would refuse? Easy money for them and its not like you are taking a sale away from them in this case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 blackswan

I'd say if you went into a dealer and said you wanted to order one they'd do a special order for you...don't see why they wouldn't. Aside from that yeah you could buy one in the UK and bring it over.
