Are any XBL MW2 boardies looking at trading up? I'm seriously considering it. My existing console is 3.5 years old, out of warranty, never had any issues with it but it seems to be labouring lately. I only have a 20GB HDD so can't copy all my games to HDD.

I prefer the black colour and quieter operation is obviously nice, but I don't like being a guinea pig either!

    Thoughts?

Thought about it myself... but I've recently picked up the Elite so if I was going to get it, it would be getting it for the sake of it.

Plus, it smacks of a new console being released in the not too distant future.

If I had an old one however....

Have it preordered and trading in my elite, with wireless adapter. So I'd say I'll cost me around 60-80

I'd imagine it means that there's another 2-3 years in the 360 yet. They're hardly going to release a new console and then bin it shortly afterwards. The PSone got a few years after it's release before the PS2 I thought?

I'm kinda sorry I didn't wait a few weeks to trade in, as I didn't realise this was going to be released this summer. Serves me right for not looking into it...

A console needs to be out at least 4 years for the company to start making money off of it , considering 1 billion was put aside for rrod , cant see the 360 being replaced for at least another 2/3 years

My cousin works in MS, he told me MS make a loss of every single unit sold. They make their money on the games, XBL, accessories and alot of revenue through the MS points system.

Yup , thats why they dont start making money until about 4 years after its released. Its not the consoles that make the money its the joypads/mic's battery packs etc etc and games , not to mention downloadable content.

You can see more and more how downloadable content is becoming routine for many games. MS get their slice of each and every download.

Which is very unfair , i think e.a are the worst azzholes for it , so much downloadable content its sickening , take tw11 for example , look at all the d/c for it and its not cheap either.
Plus with this new online code , but thats supposeably for the developers , if that is the fact then i dont really mind.
But even in recession times , i mean 1200 ms points for 5 maps by 2 is a bit much, back on cod4 4 maps for 800 was steep too.
I remember getting 19 maps for 800 ms points on graw2 , i think it was 7 maps for graw 1 for 600 ms.
I'd love to say dont buy d/c especially maps but you lose out if you dont.

I was thinking more along the lines of the PS2...

The slimline PS2 was available in late October 2004, and the new PS3 was launched in May 2005...

    According to wikipedia...

"Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 3 (then marketed as PLAYSTATION 3[23]) to the public along with its original returning boomerang style controller[24] on May 16, 2005, during the E3 2005 conference.[25] A functional version of the system was not present there,[26] nor at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2005"

You are right insofar as it wasn't released until 2006. but it wasn't long after the PS2 remake that they had the new console in the wings...

Sony had to introduce the slimline ps2 , while still developing the ps3 as the orginal xbox had online game play where as the ps2 didnt , the only difference between ps2/slimline was it was quieter , smaller and had a built-in ethernet port.
The new xbox has more features including the kinect , which for some games will be unreal .

MS and Sony have both gone on record as saying the life span of this gen of consols will be notibly longer than any previous, siting higher R and D costs / production costs on the ps3 and 360 along with R and D cost of any preceeding console.

Approx life span is looking to be about 2014 / 13 before any new hardware is introduced.

For example Sony have only just recently announced they are only breaking even now on production / sale of the ps3. MS have been doing this for nearly 2 years now.

Yep it's the classic "razor and blades" scenario.

Ordered one earlier today as my console is nearly out of warranty and would rather trade up before the price drops for my premium to be traded in. Looking forward to having a nice 250Gb HDD also!

Put mine on reserve in HMV about week after MS unvieling at that tech show in LA. HMV Couldn't give me a price but was told in region of 250 however I now hear HMV may be selling them for 224.99 yo-yo's.. ???

Have a US 360 at home, some problems playing older region coded games but by-in-large most work.. getting bit long in tooth tho it's now having problems reading dics with very minor scratches..like MW2 may take 10..20..30 times opening closing CD door to get it reading.. so looking forward to puchase of new Xbox 'Stealth' I believe it's called. .....Oh Joy

From what I have read the old 360 can use kinect aswell, it will just need another power source

Well the new machine cannot physically suffer from the rrod because apparently the machine will shut itself down to cool down before it reaches damaging temperatures. And I would be amazed if MickySoft released bogey hardware again.......
Considering they finally know how to avoid the rrod (Jasper chipset etc) I say go for it pal !!!
    :)

I dont think the console would ever come to shutting itself off though. I'd imagine its temp limiter is set a fair bit higher than the original. The issue with RROD is that the main board composit was far too heat sensetive and flexed / warped when heated and cooled over extended periods.

This meant the chipsets connections with the main board become looser over time and eventually are lost completely.

The solder doesnt help ether, its a plastic based one due to the RoHs initiative they cant use lead based solder which was very flexible and maintained the connections well even through extreme flexing, the plastic bases solder though doesnt. Like any other plastic over time and flexing it will crack and loose all flex.

I'd imagine they would have revised the design in a few area's...

    1. A better main board composit , meaing better heat / flex resistance.

    2. A better solder mixture that allows for more flex.

    3. Cooler running chipset, looking at the specs comparison the new version runs at about half the power requirements of the original design meaning cooler idle and active temps.

    4. Imporved ventelation and cooling. (Judging by the honking great fan on the side of the unit I think that was a major point.)

my bro has an old banned console that mysteriously replaced his working one . i wonder can i knock them that one in exchange for the newest model ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 280 ✭✭shay

I know this is "strictly" not in line with the thread, but a liberal interpretation would be that it does :D

I have an xbox 360 on which the picture has gone, but not the sound! Is this something that can be fixed easily (like RROD).

If I could trade that in, and my elite....:p

Its fair slick alright. Very very quiet, N wifi works perfectly, touch sensetive controlls give a pleasing tone at every touch, the unit itself is very nice looking and fits well with nearly all tv/stand types. Add an absolute crap load of usb ports to boot and its a winner.

Still dont see how anyone needs a 250gb drive though.

I have one game at a time, if I'm not playing it then why keep it I figure so installed games only take 8gb.... music is 2gb.... and saves are 1gb.

Grand total of 250gb hard drive actually used.... 9gb.

You cant save movies or tv serise to it so its a bit stupid having that much space tbh. Of coarse MS knew this to begin with hence the arcade slim internal flash memory being only 4gb.... juuuuust under what the entry / average gamer would use, method in the madness is that you pay 150 for the basic then another bit on a seperate smaller hard drive.

Perhaps some day if they release an update allowing the hard drive to be used as an actuall hard drive to store and display all media on the it will have been really worth it but until then I'd recomend holding off til a mid range unit comes out with a 60gb hard drive in it and save money.
