Darren Clarke throwing fag butts on course.

Having tuned into Scottish for a couple of hours here and there over the weekend, I couldn't help noticing on a few occasions that when Clarke was finished with his cigarette he would just throw it on the fairway or wherever and carry on.
I'm not a smoker myself but would consider myself tolerent of smokers and have no problem.
The one thing that does bug me though is WHY do most smokers not consider throwing their their fag butts on the ground as littering? Its as if fag butts don't count as litter.
I see this happening all the time on the golf course and I think Darren Clarke is setting a great precedent for it to continue and a very bad example for all the BBC viewers that smoke whilst playing.
    Your thoughts?

    ban him from the open.
    or else fine him.
it is littering, you're quite right

They usually fine for things like that. Or shame him. Was it Garcia who spat into the cup at augusta?

I can't really see it as a problem. Fag buts are gonna be made fairly unrecognisable once the grass is cut

Your quite right it bugs me too, It most annoys me when I step onto a green or tee box to find them in front of me. Tolerant of smokers also but just put it in the bin no big deal

maybe he wasn't finished his cigarette and just threw it on the ground to take his shot. Thats how i do anyways.

in warm summers surely it is dangerous to be so reckless
you could in theory send a whole club up in flames
for example, wasn't it the case that the spray used in augusta for years to greenise the course was flamable
now thats real dangerous in my book

True... However, if he's littering by throwing them away, he should be fined!

I'm pretty certain this is what he was doing, not sure what he did when he finished it though? A little pocket ashtray for butts would be a good idea. I wonder what jimenez does with his big dirty cigars when he's finished with them?

I know what your saying but the times when I saw it he was definitely on the move and NOT putting it on the ground between shots.

It was the only way Clarke was going to burn up the course on the Sunday

Whose gonna fine him? It's a private course. The only people that have any right to give out about it are the members/owners of the course.

I think it was Saturday, on the 18th. He tee'd off and was walking down off the tee, threw his smoke into the rough approaching the fairway. That was the only time I saw him do it. Counts as littering to me.

Should all plastic tees be searched for and picked up around teeboxes aswell. I mean, that is also littering.

I was following him for most of the pro-am and it's ridiculous the amount off fags he went through.at least one everey hole

So what? Who cares how many fags he smokes? The point the OP was making wasn't about how many fags he smoked but where he threw them after.

I agreed with the OP.He smoked fags on everey hole and left them on the fairway, rough wherever except for the one time he gave the arse of a fag to a man standing by the green.

No need to get so aggressive.Personally i doesn't affect me he's one of my favorite golfers i don't agree with it but i don't particularly care.

I'm not being aggressive, sorry if it sounded that way. But I don't see the big deal in Darren having a few fags while playing.

No - couldn't fault the guy for having a few fags on his way around. However, it's what he does with the non-biodegradable butts - would you feel the same if he had a few Mars bars on the way around and chucked the wrappers down the fairway when finished ?

Hey dont forget lost balls, them buggers never biodegrade.

€25 litter fine for every lost ball, that'll cure a bad slice quick enough :D

I've just read this thread and quite frankly I'm appalled. I think fags should be banned from every golf course and golf club. They have no place in our sport

Yes, when an offender flicks away a butt, a steward should rugby tackle the offending twat, handcuff him/her and march them off to explain themselves to the committee. That'll teach 'em

I'm pretty sure Clarke smokes Cigars and not cigarettes, Followed him a fair bit and I haven't seen him smoke a fag in years, he is a big Cigar fan and by all accounts clocks up a huge bill per year on them, I was at Adare and saw him throw Cigar butts into the rough, which have no Filters, but in saying that it happens every day on every course the world over and I agree with the OP its not cool at all!

Yeah; I think that's when I noticed it too. Did he use his left hand to smoke and his right hand to play . Anywhoo; bugs me when I see several cig butts on the green. I always scoop them up with the back of my putting and dispose of them in the rough. IMHO it diminishes the respect for the game and other users. It's like blowing your nose and leaving the hanky on the green. Thing is I know whose doing it but he's 3ft taller than me :(.

To be fair, I don't expect him to put the fag butts in his pocket like a Mars bar wrapper!!!

its disrespectful to the members if he is chucking rubbish around like that
if he did it at my club he'd have a problem

the comparison re mars bar wrappers is valid

On the topic of littering, Villegas chucked his banana skin into the rough earlier. Littering like Clarke's or Villegas' is not on as far as I'm concerned.

Think it's funny how confident certain people are on this thread. i'm fairly sure he was just leaving it down while he took his shot. The two times i saw him he threw it away. Someone else was pretty sure that clarke smokes cigars not cigarrettes. He smokes both.

Honestly I've never smoked in my life but i wouldn't expect any smoking golf player to walk around a field for four hours without having fag breaks...but you'd expect them to be prepared and have some kind of ash tray on the bag (or something) cause frankly it just looks knackerish finishing off a butt of a fag and then just throwing it on the fairway. Complete lack of respect in my opinion.

    It's biodegradable.
