Most economical car on the market?

Having just sold my 07 Range Rover Sport I'm on the lookout for "the most economical car on the market" as a replacement.

Anyone got any ideas? In terms of costs I'm looking for something with low depreciation (I'm planning on keeping it for 1 year), low tax and insurance and economical on fuel.

It needs to be a 4 / 5 door that will carry two child seats safely and comfortably.

Automatic would be nice but not averse to manual.

If your doing mostly city driving a Prius or a Civic hybrid would be your best bet.

Not that it'd suit, but the MINI Cooper D. I got 85mpg out of one, and it's 104 a year to tax.

It's not all about the lowest fuel economy lads. Motorcheck is looking for something that is going to cost him the least overall, so has very low depreciation and tax, as well as good economy (hand in hand with the tax more or less).

From a purely cost perspective, I'd say a 1 year old Cooper D would cost you the least to run over a year. Not practical for the kids in the back, and I don't think the clubman is any better.

If it's got to be larger than that, then I'd say a year old new model E-Class will probably lose the least over the next year, Manuals are €156 to tax and have economy around 5.3l/100km.

Just need to find one cheap enough now.

The larger wheel models dont get into 156 bracket. THe larger wheels are a must tbh. They are the worst looking car in executive range in basic form but in sport spec, they are impressive.

Whatever about spending more money on wheels because they look nicer, surely going up a tax bracket for them is madness?

@Motorcheck - If you're spending fairly big money on this car then depreciation will be your biggest expense. On this basis, i'd be looking for something that's very keenly-priced as much as for any particular make & model.

Yep. Purchase price will be a big part of it. Any thoughts on what an acceptable depreciation would be for one year? I'm guessing 10% is too much to hope for?
