Swapping petrol focus for diesel something!

    Hi,
I've got a 1.4l petrol focus (99 hatchback) that I'm hoping to change soon. Car is going fine at the minute but I've had a few problems over the time I've had it and fancy a change.

Bf is a diesel fitter and, though he can and does fix the focus when needed, he reckons I'd be better off with a diesel. I'm hoping to just swap the car (or sell privately and just buy with whatever amount I get). Have very little extra to put with it. So max 2k if I could.

I know I haven't got much to work with but what kind of cars would you recommend? I'd consider a petrol still, reliability is most important really as I do quite a lot of driving. Don't mind a hatchback or saloon, just don't want to go any smaller than the focus.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    So a 2 grand-ish budget altogether?

Id say that puts you in or around the year 2000ish and the best diesel engine in my opinion are the ones you find in VW, Skoda, Seat (I think they had them then).

The Ford diesels around that time are the TD (old), TDDI (newer) and TDCI (newest and best IMO but pushing the budget at best).

The problem with the Fords from what I read is that the TDCI came out in 2002ish and I imagine that could be out of the price range. The TD is very old and the TDDI never really got good reviews from car websites.

If there is nothing wrong with your existing car and your only changing for the stake of changing then I suggest holding onto it. On such a tight budget you could be replacing a relatively trouble free car with something that will break your heart and wallet.
