Its disappointing but understandable with the injuries he has suffered the last few seasons. He has to get his club career back on track and stay fit.

Seeing as he has missed so much of his career through injury i dont think this is a bad idea for him. Quitting international football will allow him to concentrate on his club career & possibly give him a year or two at a higher level.

The same tactic has worked for Scholes & Carragher who have both flourished after they have retired from Internationals. Reid will be a loss to Ireland as he was probably our most explosive central midfielder but i think we have adequate cover there for the time being. Good luck to him.

It's a shame the injuries always got in the way, Reid was solid around the time of the 2002 WC and the years just after and for that we have to thank him.

That's very disappointing. He really would have offered us something we don't have in midfield atm, a solid defensive player who can actually pass the ball. Hope he does well, when he's fit, he's got the potential to be a top 4 player imo.

Very very diasappointing, alays thought he looked class for us in the middle of the park.

He received some of his injuries playing for Ireland, against Germany away which kept him out for a full season. I'd say his new club insisted on this before they signed him. Wish him all the best

Terrible shame. He has a lot of flair. Alas, it's probably for the best for him career wise.

He never really seemed to quite reach his full potential with all the injury setbacks.
Great pro and real pity to see him quit the international team. He would walk into our team fully fit.

No loss as has not played for Ireland in quite some time. Would have been great player had injuries not hampered him.

disappointing :( always had hope that he would form the basis for a decent midfield for our 2012 qualifying campaign. hes the hargreaves of ireland, a great player but oh so frustrating. really feel for the lad.

best of luck with the rest of you career steven.

    Big loss. Wish him well.

    Caro Giovanni,
    C'è anche un altro Reid...

Very disappointing to hear from an Irish perspective but if it prolongs his career at all, I'm happy for him. Always rated him highly and he's always come across as a great professional.

Wasn't expecting him to retire to be honest, but i knew there was very little hope of him playing for the Republic again,

No big loss to be honest, at least it draws a line under it and we can move on.

Wish him all the best with West Brom this season.

Shame. I've no doubt in my mind he would've played for a top club had he been luckier with injuries.

in some ways it is good for ireland, in that we wont be pinning hopes on him saving our mid-field. In the last 4 years, how many times has the phrase "if only we had steven reid fit...". Im not convinced that he will stay fit for long periods of time.

Fair play to him, its the right decision for him seeing as hes had alot of trouble over the last few years.
Hopefully he can get in some solid soccer now

probably the best decision for his career tbh

Class player could of been at a top 4 club only for the injuries, has it all:( Couldnt see Trapp playing him or even putting him in the squad but would of been nice to have him when Trap leaves.

No loss as has not played for Ireland in quite some time.

harsh. i think he could have added something to us. Whelan and Andrews showed huge quality in Paris, lets hope they carry it on, but from a creativity point of view, Reid offers a bit more than them too.

super player 3 or 4 years ago.

Pity he's called it quits. Always thought he was a very good player when fit. A friend of mine met him once on a night out and said he was a pure gent too.

Lets hope his decision has nothing to do with Trap's comments last year about him...

Terrible shame. I remember watching the opening qualifiers against Georgia and Montenegro and being filled with hope, because he looked fit and played very well. Sad to think about what could have been had he been available to us for the full campaign.

It is the right decision for his career though, hope he has a decent season for WBA.

The man has had a such a horrendous time with injuries over the last few years. I really fear for his future, Big Sam clearly didn't think he could rebuild his career so he has moved on. I really wish him all the best at West Brom and its the right decision for him to make.

Its hard to believe he is still only 29, he has been around for a long time. Was part of our 2002 World Cup campaign.

Reid 'unlikely' to make Irish return under Trapattoni - http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/reid-unlikely-to-make-irish-return-under-trapattoni-2913874.html
The West Brom right-back retired from international football in July 2010 after the manager publicly questioned his ability to return to full fitness after a series of serious knee injuries.

Now in his second season as a Baggies regular, the question of an international return has cropped up. However, Reid -- who played in the 2002 World Cup finals and was an early favourite of Trapattoni after he took the Ireland job -- has all but ruled any prospect of pulling on a green shirt again.

"There is no contact (from the Ireland camp) and I do not think that will be happening," Reid said.

"Deep down, I would find it difficult after the comments made by the manager when I was getting back to fitness.

"You can never say never in football, and if the opportunity did come around, I would have to see. But at the minute, it is looking pretty unlikely that it will happen."
It sounds like Reid would love to come back into the fold, but hasn't been approached.

Personally, I'd have him back in an instant.
