Tried aqueous and all those similar creams, tried steroid cream also which clears it up but can't keep using this.
    Eczema on face and hands.

Sorry but there is no cure. This is something for your doctor and you to manage together.

ok, my 2 dont have eczema, but have dry and sensitive skin prone to psoriasis and here is what i do.
I did not regularly use baby wipes until my children were over 1, even more, and still use only sparingly and never on any other part of body. Only cotton wool and water. I got a mini wipes box for carrying around and just brought some with me.
I dont use products containing SLS (sodium laureth sulfate) as it dries the skin out - I use the Naked range from boots, or baby gaia or little me baby organics.
All the moisturisers i use dont contain paraffin - ie Aquaius cream. as this is generally regarded as am emollient that does not actually treat the skin. so again the ranges listed above or just plain old almond or olive oil. coconut is also great. Lidl actually have great baby stuff that has no parabens or petrochemicals, but doe shave perfum - so not perfect.
My two have no skin problems, thankfully, but when minded by family if they use wipes my daughter will get awful nappy rash. If i use baby wipes on face they break out. if i use a bath product with sls their skin gets very dry.
I avoid parabens also, for different reasons.
    some info here - http://www.moom.com/why_botanical.php#mineral_oil
forgot about the washing powder - i try to use ones with little or no fragrance as the ariels, fairy and others seem to irritate , ecoover and again aldi/lidl seem to be fine. I use less then the recommended also, as mostly they clothes are only in for a refresh. I have to wash everything given to me by friends and family as the smell sorry fragrance is overwhelming. I dont like fabric conditioner, but that is a personal choice, so dont use that either.

my 2.5 yo has had eczema since around 6 months old, we attend Crumlin about twice a year.

they recommend 1% steroid cream on face, reckon it'll do no harm, and stronger on other body parts if needed.

Also recommend the aveeno products (dermexa)

Oilatum in bath, nothing ever clears it fully so really hoping he out grows it in next year or two

I used to look after a baby whole suffered terribly with eczema...he used to have his skin in shreds from scratching.
His mum was recommended to bring him to see a pharmacist in Foley Chemist on Thomas Street in Dublin who specialises in skin disorders.
He was given 3 different lotions/ointments that had to be used a couple of times a day. 1 was a wash that was used in his bath/or applied to a facecloth to wash. Another one was a vaseline type ointment that was used to seal any open wounds/scratches etc and then the 3rd step in it was a lotion that was to be put all over his body.
It was quite time consuming but definitely worth it. the improvement within a couple of days was amazing.
The baby is now 12 so Im not fully sure if the creams are still available but might be worth a try??

Hi.My 2 eldest had eczema from a few months old.I used Oilatum in their baths and was told only to bathe them twice a week.I used the blue Oilatum, found the white 1 for flare ups made it worse.I never used shampoo, just rinsed their hair in the oilatum and used a sicocks based moisturiser. My GP prescribed a steroid cream called Mildisone and that was brilliant, tried loads of other ones before that and this was the best. But you can't use it all the time.Main thing is to keep skin moisturised and be careful with with your babies clothes, wool is a no-no.
The only washing powder I could use was Bold, but everyones different.
It can be very distressing on both you and the baby.I can remember DS1 using his chin to scratch his chest before he had the coordination to do it with his hands.I had it myself, still get it a bit,and can remember how itchy/painful it is.Anyway, both boys are clear now and have been for years.DS is almost 14 and DS1 is 8,so take hope that your baby might grow out of it in a few years.
    Good luck with it.

We thought our child had psoriasis but it turned out to be baby exzema. Mammy useses stuff called Betnovate and hey presto it 100% cleared up. Only thing is that het father got it for his presciption for him self for his different skin condition but I have no qulalms about using it since it works. Usually in Spain you dont need a prescription for the likes of this so when our friend goes on holidays this year we will get a few tubes:)

Betnovate is a very powerful steroid cream. I wouldn't be putting it on a baby without a doctors supervision. This is a very dangerous thing to do.

My child is almost 3 and you are right, I'm not a doctor so I was'nt advocating its use on a 6 month old baby. I just seen this post so responded with my experience

Betnovate drug Information. Not for use on children under 2, prolonged use may cause long term skin damage.

I know about this cream because my husband gets psoroisis on his hands and feet. It thins the skin so I would be very wary about putting it on a face.

Brazilnuts (selenium content) and exercise seem to have helped his condition as he has not had a flare up in over a year.

    Betnovate does work though.

My hubby had eczema very badly for nigh on 40 years and was hospitalised with it several times. About 10 years ago he was given Protopic by the GP as he had a large patch on his leg that would not clear up. He had been given high concerntration of Betnovate as a small child and it did thin the skin on his legs. The Protopic worked and he hasn't had a bit of eczema since.
As an aside a nephew of his was desperate with eczema as a small child but grew out of it by about 7 or 8 so there is hope there.

My daugher suffered with exzema too. Mainly on her face and back and later into her elbows and knees. Anytime she had a flare up we had to get the 1% steroid ointment but the key to it is SILCOCKS BASE. It is wonderful stuff and keeps the exzema at bay. When she was suffering with it i covered the affected parts in the silcocks base everytime i changed her nappy. U need to massage it in, first i was just putting it on and allowing it to sink in but massaging it in worked much better. Also bathed and washed her hair with the silcocks base. When she got out of the bath i would put a lot on her too. After maybe a year or so she never really gets flare ups anymore and her skin is usually fine. I still put the silcocks base on her knees, elbows and shoulders when i am dressing her in the morning and undressing her at night. Its worth it .. its terrible to see the poor little things scratching at their skin.

A huge tub of silcocks base costs €4 in any chemist so its also an afforable way to keep it at bay :)

Try Probiotics for children with Lactobacillus rhamnosus, this has been shown to improve rashes and skin allergies.

My belief is that all skin conditions are caused by what goes in your mouth. I had eczema from head to toe as a child but cut out sugars and started eating only un-processed foods + a Probiotic top up and all of my problems went away.

Our 10 month old had some allergies and health issue's 3 months back we started him on a course of Probiotics and he is thriving and his skin is glowing.

    Have a read here: http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/08/03/food.allergies.er.gut/index.html

May not work for all cases but I think it is worth a try.

our daughter had really severe eczema from near birth.
    things that worked:
    1. paraffin gel all over a few times a day
    2. seaweed for the bath: www.aalgo.com, can mix some if into a paste for the really bad bits.
    3. if she is losing sleep cos of scratching: www.scratchsleeves.com
    4. goats milk formula

it's trial and error. what works for one, doesn't work for another.

    best of luck:)
