    Hey,
I lost my iphone a couple of weeks ago. Fell out of my pocket in a taxi .
Stupidly i didn't have insurance. Rang all the relevant police stations that have taken over the roll of the carriage office but no luck.
What are my options? I can't afford the €500 odd quid for a new one. 7 months left on my contract. Any one any ideas? Do i just have to go without and wait for my upgrade?
    Thanks.

I feel your pain. Was with my sister last week when she lost her 9 day old 3gs. It hasn't even come off her bill yet.. we came home to see a letter from the provider congratulating her on her new iphone :( Then, insult to injury, got an email yesterday from Dublin Airport Authority (with whom I'd reported the loss, as it was lost at the airport) entitled "Found property" - got all excited, opened the email, it said "This is to inform you that the property you reported lost at Dublin Airport has not been found." What sort of sadistic git worded that?

But yes, not a lot you can do, I'm afraid, sorry :(

You could try posting it up on lost.ie

Disclaimer: I run the site, but we've had excellent success in returning lost items to people. Excuse the pun but you've nothing to lose.

I wonder if there's a way of tracking them to the IP address next time they're synced with iTunes?

Not the IP address but the MAC address or Serial number I would hope they could do something. I know they can trace the IMEI number because when I requested an unlock form o2 they unlocked it through iTunes without me giving any more details than the IMEI and phone number.

That sucks, I had a terrible experience with lost property in Dublin airport. I (very stupidly) stowed away my camera and mp3 player in the seat back pocket for landing. Got off the plane, went home and only realised when I went to look at photos. Hoped it would be found as it was the last flight for that aircraft that night.

After a hell of a lot of phonecalls, got through to one helpful guy who told me to come out the airport and if I gave a very detailed description I could go have a look around lost and found. Drove out to the airport and was told nope, no one can go in and look as they would say everything was theirs. Tried to argue and say my holiday pictures with me in them would be on the camera, but no chance. Very frustrating.

Yeah, it wouldn't be my first run in with that stupid airport, either. I (also very stupidly) put a brand new digital camera in my checked luggage on the way home from my honeymoon. When I took the bag off the carousel, the zip was partially open - I opened it there and then, and it was gone. Funny how none of the dirty clothes had 'fallen out' of the opened bag. Reported stolen before I even left the building, and no joy. Not from airport, airline, travel insurance, nothing. It's a racket, I wonder if anyone gets their property back from them.

No I didn't get my missing property back from Dublin airport either. The zip was rammed open and broken and one of my shoes was missing. One shoe! That's of no use to anyone else. Got them on the broken case though, they gave me a voucher for a place in town to fix the zip. Why would they steal one shoe?

OP can you claim for it as an all risk item on your house insurance?

If you have an apple mobile me subscription then you can track your iPhone from their site and see where it is on a map. It will also allow you to wipe it remotely and send it messages.

Probably not much use to you now but something to consider for future reference.

This is the only reason why I subscribe to MobileMe, it's a decent service but no reason for the charge, but add on hat you can find lost iPhones, iPads etc it's great.

Definitely get it next time, if there is a next time.

    thanks all for the comments.
Have put it up on lost.ie, thanks for that suggestion.
I'm not sure if i can claim it on the house insurance, i'll look into that.
Afraid i didn't have that MeMobile, next time....
think i'll get the insurance next time too...however i'll still feel a bit miffed handing over €9 a month. I'd almost feel compelled to lose it just to get my money's worth...
