Hi my names Jonny and I was wondering as I live in Bray are there any local garages that anyone knows about that will take on an apprentice, I don't have a licence at the moment but I will be getting a learners permit in the next month or 2.

Would not having a licence effect getting an apprenticeship much?
Seeing as it is to do with cars I would have though so.

I don't think a few months is going to make any difference.

For the first year or so you will be confined to tidying up the workshop and making tea. :D

Yeah thought so myself, well I suppose that come with most apprenticeships. :P

I had a motorbike a year before I started mine, only learned to drive a car when I reached 26.

Ah so its not a very big deal not being able to drive at the start, thanks for clearing that up. Just need to find a garage now that will take me on.

Any garage ive worked in you will need a full licence to be put on the Insurance and be allowed drive the cars.. id say call into every garage you can in a relastic area you could travel to, The motor trade is not the best at the minute but you never know, I think best bet is to call in in person just say your getting your licence asap

Yeah I was thinking as well, once I have the apprenticeship I can get a letter off the garage and get fast traced to my full licence as I need it for work.

You need to have a learner permit/provisional/whatever the fúck it's called now for 6 months before you can do a driving test.

Not if you get a letter from your place of work stateing that you need the licence for work purposes then you can get it whenever they can fit you in.

Unless you can give an authoritative link for that statement, I call BS.

I've had this conversation with many people in the past, the 6 month wait is mandatory, there's no way around it.

A letter will only cut down the waiting time on getting a test, after the six months are up. For example you may have a 12 week waiting list, but with the letter you might get a 6 week waiting time.

Also, the motor trade is very hard to break into at the moment, and apprenticeships are very hard come by, so best of luck in finding one, and if you do, don't screw it up :D

Thanks for clearing that up, I was not aware that it was mandatory if needed for work.

Yeah I wont screw it up, I have a very keen interest in cars and how they work, I want to one day specialise in performance modifications.
