    Hi guys

My little guy is 9 months and I'm still finding it hard to get him to take water or juice from his sippy cup. He'd rather just play with the cup and throw it on the floor:rolleyes: I've bought a couple of different cups too.
He is actually not great at taking water from his bottle either he might take a tiny sip and then push it away. I dont want him getting dehydrated although he takes loads of fruit and is never constipated.
Just wondering has anyone any ideas/advice on gettin him to drink from his cup.

    Cheers x

I introduced the cup quiet early, around four months, he played with it more than dranks from it, but has it mastered sice around six months. (he's eight months now)
Have you avent bottles? If so, get the handles they have. You can use them with his bottle, so he'll learn that they are for holding when drinking. Use them all the time even with his milk. they only cost 3.50 for two, (dont bother with the training cups yet), use one of your own small newborn bottles, the handles fit all avents bottles and cups.
How many bottles are you giving him, this may be why he's not taking water. Maybe just not thirsty enought for it?
Personally, I'd let him play away with it, and hold it for him after his meals so he can take a drink, he'll get the idea eventually.

Also dont give him juice until he takes the water, if you do this then he may never drink water.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice:) yes he uses avent bottles. I never even heard of those handle things thats a great idea where did you buy yours?
He doesnt seem to like the juice so I stopped buying it I'd rather get him to drink the water. I've also cut back from 4 bottle to 3 a day he's getting an extra meal instead. Yea I suppose I'll just have to persevere with him!!

You can get them in mothercare/smyths and Ken Blacks, lots of chemists too. Also they come on the avent trainer cups too. All avent bottles and cups have the same size mouth on them so you can actually you the teat off his bottle on the cups too if you wanted. basically, all avent stuff are the same size so are interchangable. Hope this makes sense.:p

Our little lad is on three bottles too now, and since cutting down to three, he is using a cup a lot more. there is no harm to let him play with it until he gets used to it, I have also picked my sons up off the floor a hundred times, but when he is thirsty he will drink from it.

My little fella was the same wouldnt' drink much from a sippy cup for me at all until he was over one. I used to give him a bottle of water to drink from during the day. I can't even remember when but he just got a taste for water and juice all of a sudden and then there were no problems. If he's getting plenty of fruit I wouldn't worry too much he'll come round eventually.....

Tried again today he took maybe 2 sips from it then turned it upside down and started chewing the end of it
Doesnt seem too gone on the juice which is probably a good thing! I think I'll just try him with the handles for the bottles first and see how he gets on:D

My daughter wouldn't drink from her sippy cups either, someone suggested to me to try her with the pop top bottles of water (supervalue and ballygowen do small kids size ones also they are handy if your travelling or out and about all day), so i did and it worked, she still used occasionally turn them upside down but when she did we just popped the top shut and she quickly learned if it went upside down she couldn't get water from it, plus i knew she was getting about 250ml a day and some days she drank two!

a few weeks later we tried the sippy cup and she took it no problem after getting used to not having her baby bottle top!

DS is useless with a sippy cup. Does the exact same thing, turns it upside down and throws it around. If he does drink from it he'll spit out most of it. I've started giving him drinks from a normal glass or from a straw. He takes both no problem.

My little man is a devil for spitting out drinks after he's drank it.

Someone on another forum suggested this bottle/cup:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/NUK-First-Choice-Learner-Bottle/dp/B000KUAL54

I only managed to find one today and he drank three ounces of juice from it this morning.
