If it is an import, you pay vat (at irish rates) based on the uk invoice price paid. You then pay vrt based on open market selling price.

    Calculate your VRT here

Be warned, all cars seem to be worth at least 20-30% more on the open market in the eyes of Mr. Tax man

Maybe if i explain a bit more it might help. Because of my childs disability i have been granted a primary medical cert which means if i buy a new car and modify it I am exempt from vrt on the car and vat. in otherwords the govt refund it to me.

I just want to see what figure on a new car i am dealing with before i go to a dealer. In otherwords I want to make sure he is not taking it off to put it on so to speak.

    Thank you

You can find out all the in's and out's of the exemption scheme on the Revenue website here. If I was you I wouldn't mention the exemption until you had finalised a price on the car with a dealer first. Working out the VRT & VAT element of the price after that should be pretty straightforward.

If you need any help just let me know what car you're buying and the price the dealer is quoting you. We'll work it out for you here.

I am thinking along the lines of a skoda octavia or a skoda roomster.I also like toyota corollas.

The octavia would be the one with the airconditioning. I need to have it for my child. Long story.

I had been thinking of upgrading my 08 oct(can think of the model but its the one with airconditioning) in jan and the garage wanted 8k which was madness but yes its petrol and the bottom has fallen

I reckon now if i go with a standard diesel model with airconditioning resale will be good as milage wont be too high and its a taxi favorate.

    Any ideas.
