I overtook a car today on a 100 kph (I think ) part of road, as I was getting back to my side of the road I noticed the guards had a speed trap set up but I was still under 100 kph. The guard on the right hand side of the road put his right hand out and waved it up and down just as I was on him, I saw it with the corner of my eye really. I dont know if he wanted me to stop or slow down, anyway I kept going and kept to the speed limit and they never followed me. If they did want me to stop does anyone know what I can expect from them next.

I've gone through speed checks before at around 110 kmph while overtaking, and was never stopped.

Up and down motion, with palm facing ground sounds like slow down to me.

I've always wondered about this, in general - how are you supposed to know when they want you to stop? I mean there is nothing in the rules of the road or in the driving test that teaches you what a guard will do when he wants you to pull over. So if you ignore the flashing lights etc., are you breaking the law?

S.109 of the Road Traffic Act gives a garda the power to stop a vehicle in a public place.
If a Garda wants you to stop, they'll raise their hand up with an open hand, palm facing the driver they want to stop. It's not a hard and fast rule though.

IIRC, it is in the rules of the road, its the exact same as a Garda doing point duty at a junction.

Read the Rules of the Road. (hint: page 131)

Hand signals used when controlling traffic (including checkpoints or at the side of the road, etc)

if the Garda car stays behind you and is obviously tailing you then it should be pretty obvious you're the focus of their attention, especially if he gives you a blast from the siren.

I wonder is that what the guy at the oxygin concert will say in court?
" Your honor, I didn't think he wanted me to stop" :D

Yep, sounds like a slow down sign.

He probably just signaled for you to slow down as he probably thought you were over the speed limit!

Fingers crossed a summons doesn't arrive in the coming weeks :D

If they were Gards out with a gun, they must stop you to issue you with the fine/notification, unlike the Gatso vans. So your fine.

Just a warning to keep an eye on the speed limit, nothing to worry about.
If they wanted you to stop, you'd know about it - a big STOP gesture with one hand, the other hand directing you where to park.

Hand signal or not, you do not ask a car to stop that goes at 100 Km/h on a motorway like road by waving at the driver and showing your palm off. You use signaling way before the point you want people to stop or slow down...

    Some tried before...

That was a bad mistake, hardly the car drivers fault . I had just overtaken a car and pulled back in front of it so if the guard made me stop I'd have to break just in front of the same car. Maybe he saw the danger!

I don't think we can call that a mistake.
For me this is a non respect of basic traffic rules and suicide wish.
You just don't stop in a lane on a motorway and get your palm out. Even if a guy sees you, it takes time to bring a car going at 100 km/h to a full stop.
