I need to up date my glasses and was going to make an appointment with Specsavers - I have never gone to them before and was looking for advice as to whether they are good and what type of glasses they have are they very fashionable. At the moment I wear Roberto Cavalli glasses but would like to get new frames as well.

    Thanks

Well the only reason I go to Specsavers is for the 2 for 1 deal. It's amazing. You get another pair of frames for the same price or less for free. They offer a range of extras like ultra light, reactions, anti-glare etc... Some of the range they have is not absolutely fabulous but they do have nice ones. Why don't you pop into the local Specsavers and look at the range, if you like them, then ask to book an appointment. Eye test is €25 I think, they sometimes do vouchers for €15 in your newspapers or stuff like that.

Look at their special offers section http://www.specsavers.ie/offers/

Cannot recommend them enough. They are quick in processing your glasses too.

Personally I have had nothing but bad experiences with Specsavers, as well as my OH (who insisted on going there against my advice because of their offers; he had nothing buy a bad time with them) and friends.

When I went in to choose frames, I really didn't know and picked up an oval pair, a more rectangular pair and a thick frame. Asked which one did they suggest suited my face shape etc, and was told, they'd all be fine. Which is nonsense. And because I'm a bit a bit cheeky, I picked up three very different pairs when I went in with my Dad, one a womens pair :D, and he was told the same thing ALL would suit him fine.

Their offers seem good but do shop around, sometimes Vision Express etc are quite good.

If you are a glasses wearer everyday or most of the time, I think it is really really important to have someone take their time with you in helping you choose, and not just rush you into purchasing something for the offer...

    My tuppence worth anyway...

Price wise they're good, but if you have an unusual prescription that affects the frames you can wear make sure you get someone who knows what they're doing. None of the chain shop staff are really that good. I was in Vision Express and I have a small face and astigmatism, so I need my glasses to fit perfectly or the lenses don't work, and dear God we went through hell with them. They sold me the wrong kind of glasses, we returned them, then the new pair snapped in half. Got the money back and went to Dixon Hempenstalls. They were great.

The only reason I chose Specsavers was because of the buy one, get one pair of frames free offer tbh. I wasn't blown away by their choice, and I wouldn't say they are overly fashionable. I don't wear glasses every day so I wasn't really too bothered by what they looked like tbh.

Same as above really. I only need glasses for driving and working on a PC so was cheap and cheerful. I found the colour chipped of the frames after a short while and not a great range but the eye test was really good.

My husband wears glasses all the time and has got his last few pairs in Spec savers but wont be going back. They put the lens in the wrong pair, in fairness they changed it without any hassle. The colour chipped of both pairs of frames and one pair snapped in two.

Good for someone like me who only wears glasses for short periods but not good for all day users.

Thanks for all the advice, I wear glasses every day, don't want contacts but they are not an extremely strong perscription. I have made an appointment with them for Thursday evening and have also made an appointment with another opticians for Saturday afternoon. After reading that the colour on the glasses may chip is a bit off putting I don't want to be going around wearing chipped glasses!! I may cancel the appointment in Specsavers.

I have had 10 pairs of glassed from Specsavers and only the pair I am wearing chipped so I just took the lenses out and spray painted them!!! I get my prescription with an optician and the frams from SS! No issues with them...

make sure that the glasses fit you properly! I bought two pairs at Christmas and was told they could tighten them to fit me properly (I have quite a large head btw when it comes to glasses) but when they tightened them they were crooked on my face. Have to deal with glasses that are constantly falling down my nose all the time!

Have decided to cancel the appointment for both Specsavers and the other opticians and made one with the Optician my brother uses as he has never had any problems from them. I really don't want to have paid for glasses and then have to spray paint them, the whole point of getting new frames is that they are new and the paint shouldn't come off them. Thanks for all the advice.

One advantage of Specsavers, you can try on a load of different frames and pick out the ones you like then write down the serial/model number of the frames and you can buy them on ebay then for a fraction of the price, provided your optician will fit lenses into frames not purchased from them.

There is two places on ebay I bought frames off & all genuine as they sell the ex display frames from opticians and they do list any faults with the frames. I got a friend a pair of frames for £5 - ex display ones with no marks or anything on them. I told her to try them on in specsavers & if she liked them I'd get them for her, they wanted €149 for the frames in Specsavers so she was delighted.

They tried to sell me glasses and I didn't even need them.. after 20 minutes of a stand-off with the "optician" I asked her would she wear glasses if they were her eyes.. She answered 'No, probably not'.. and I left.. cowboys is an understatement..:mad:

Hi, do you mean you got your eyes tested didn't need glass and they still tried to sell them to you?? At least you stood up to her, there are probably some people who would have just given in and got them. They must work off a commission.

I have never understood why people who don't need glass wear them as a fashion accessory.

i have to say i'm quite surprised about the negative feedback, i've always got my glasses in specsavers apart from my very 1st pair when i was 12! I've never had a problem with anything, i find them great and very careful and methodical. The last 3 times i've gone in they've assured me i dont need new glasses, i've never had a sales push. granted, i've never experienced their help in picking out frames, i tend to just get a friend in with me for opinions.

I've had a hit and miss experience with Specsavers. I used to go to one store and had a bad experience when trialing contact lenses for the first time.

The consulation area with sales assistants was set up directly across from the waiting area and I received my lesson right in front of waiting customers, the assistant was horrible aswell, she got very exasperated when I couldn't get the contacts in. Half a dozen people gawping at me didn't help either :o I left and made an appointment with a non-chain opticians who were really nice, and I learned the knack of using contacts with them. They were more expensive thought than specsavers for contacts. Never bought specs there.

Since, I've changed to another Specsavers in a different town for mere convenience to work, and who I've had no problems with. I'm still wearing the same specs four years later, still in good condition. Only gripe I have is, partly my own fault, I bought new glasses two years ago, selected with assistances help, but I found them slightly tight after the purchase and have never worn them and I reverted back to my current pair, as they are very comfortable and still quite fashionable .

Other than that, I've had no problems and find their selection quite good. The greater the selection, the more confused I get :D

This is slightly off topic but I don't think it's worth starting a new thread for. I have tried specsaavers and they don't seem to have a good selection of sunglasses for men, does anyone know a place in Dublin where I can get a pair of perscription Ray Bans? Something like these http://www.glassboutique.co.uk/catalog/images/large_rayban_wayf_black_400x400.jpg

    Thanks guys.

Was never over happy with their service but I guess they are like the tesco etc of buying glasses you know?

The last time I went there (a year ago - have been wearing glasses all my life) I had one horrendous experience - wild horses couldnt drag me back.

They changed the lenses in my glasses on a friday (same glasses just new lenses-theyd gotton scratched. BTW I depend on glasses 100% - cant do anything without them). It was a bank holiday. By friday night I couldnt judge where I was walking. By saturday I couldnt drive the car (I actually thumped a kirb badly breaking a hubcap the friday leaving the car park), by sunday my eyes looked like they were popping out of my head and headache very bad. So i get driven back to them - they gave me wrong perscription.

Not even a fu*king apology - nothing. Had to pay to get eyes retested and wait another 3 days for new lenses. ****ers. Hate them.

OP if you are in Dublin or it suits you to visit, go to Grants opticians in Temple Bar. They're on the quays. Fantastic place. I got a pair of Gucci frames there nine years ago and they are still perfect. They were expensive - about €200 at the time - but I only had to change the lens this year for the first time. Their eye tests are extremely thorough - I was about half an hour doing mine but it was absolutely spot on. Very funky place too - they have a cabinet full of glasses they supplied for various Irish Films.

I would never go near them - three pairs of glasses fell apart on me.

I wear glasses every day and I think Vision Express or a local opticians are way better, you might pay a bit more, but in the long run you get better value for money IMO

OMG that's terrible the least they should have done was not charge you for a retest and they should have gotten you the new lenses immediately.

I got them tested in a Opticians locally and they were most helpful and did a thorough eye test and helped me to pick out new frames and told me which were too big and which colours didn't suit me which was fantastic so they weren't trying to sell me the most expensive frames. Got a pair of versace ones and looking forward to collecting them later.

Vision Express definitely sell Ray Bans and can make them up to a prescription but whether or not they would have that particular frame or similar might depend on the branch but you could always try your nearest branch and they might be able to order that frame in for you if they don't have a similar one.

Also, Vision Express have a great 2 for 1 offer on designer frames inc. lenses at the mo - designers include Ted Baker, GANT, Bench, Police etc. It's definitely worth checking out!

I get my glasses online, it's much cheaper (I paid about £10 per pair)

I found specsavers in the GPO Arcade ok (one man in there spent about an hour with me getting all sorts of frames that weren't on display) but I'd never go back into any of the others again. Their selection is quite poor and the staff aren't very helpful.

I prefer to go to an optician's where everyone knows what they're doing. It's quite obvious that a lot of the staff in Specsaver's don't.

I've seen them let someone leave the shop with the wrong prescription lenses in their glasses because they didn't have the correct lenses in stock and just gave them something near enough.

When it comes to your eyes "near enough" is absolute rubbish.
