I've got a Peugoet 207 1.6 diesel, and when I hit 55-60mph a constant noise can be heard, mechanic assumed it was a bearing gone and he replaced 2 bearings but noise is still there. Its not a scraping or tearing noise just a constant hum. Any ideas, its very frustrating and i'm afraid I could be doing damage even tho mechanic says its alright:confused: Any help appreciated

    Hi patsyrockem,
Does it happen all the time....??
Does it make the noise when you press the clutch...??
The 1.6 hdi has a partical filter which regens every 3-400mls,when it regens
the exhaust can make a booing/throaty sound as the exhaust temp can
    rise to 4-500 degC........:)

Hi Row, Thanks for your reply and interest, the noise is there all the time at speeds in excess of 55-60mph even tho it does increase and decrease slightly. The wheel bearings have been checked and are fine, the mechanic said car is fine to drive but he can't get to the bottom of it. A friend suggested wear in the gear box????? I know very little and its frustrating because the car is great otherwise.

You didn't put new tyres on it by any chance?

The tyres are relatively new but I only have the car about 6wks so could'nt say how old they are:( Have you an idea???

The only thing that I can think of is that cheap tyres tend to be very hard rubber and are very noisey. The other would be a wheel bearing which your mechanic has already ruled out.
