Iomega portable hard drive

The USB cable that came with my Iomega portable hard drive is split into 2 jacks for insertion into a PC. The instructions suggest the second jack is to supply power if the computer doesn't supply sufficient power through the other line. I intend using it connected to an Edision twin satellite/terrestrial TV receiver, but I'm anxious not to harm either component if I merely connect one jack to the single port of the receiver. Do I need to change the drive for one with a dedicated power cable?

Get a 5V supply with USB socket. Readily available.

USB should only supply max of 0.5A unless you are Apple and think you can ignore specs.
Many portable hard drives need more, especially to startup.

The edison will provide the necessary power from the USB. You will not need to use the second usb part of the cable.

What USB current can edison do? My external HDD works on some USB ports and others it needs a PSU (I use an old nokia PSU as it has a suitable PSU jack socket).

Anyhow, if it's erratic add a PSU.
