Die Hard is a crap film!!

Woah, before you foam at the mouth towards me I don't think it is. It's one of my favourite, well-written action movies with possibly one of the greatest villians on celluloid ("Now I have a machine gun.........heoo......heoo..................heoo")

Then why is it that everywhere I go people seem to regard it as a crap film or a piece of throwaway 80's tosh?

Case in point being when I was at the bus station the other day and a guy and a girl were talking about Twilight. He points out that while girls have that, we have Die Hard - "Which is a really crap film" I had to bite my lip to refrain from joining in their conversation and correcting this tasteless arsewipe.

Die Hard wouldn't be the only film that I find to be unfairly seen in this light, people have the wrong idea about Arnie's films and don't understand why they're popular. Stallone's films are mauled by the general public too with an apparent serious dislike to Cliffhanger, I actually found that film to be a fairly solid action movie.

I consider Aliens to be one of my favourite films of all time, it's that one film for me that each of us have where we know it inside out. I actually get odd looks and a cocky dismissal from "film buffs" when I say what I think of the film.

Anywho, how has the general public shocked you in terms of their views on supposed movie classics?

Hang on....you mention "movie classics" at the end but before that go on about Cliffhanger and Arnie films? Can I take it you are not taking about Twins there? Cliffhanger is solid stuff but hardly a classic. I love Die Hard myself but I do think it's a little overrated.

Bottome line here is people have differing opinions, and lot's of people don't really give a damn about films in general.

I wouldnt call it a "classic", but its still a great film!

Die Hard along with Lethal Weapon changed the "akshun" genre, both are minor genre classics but its what they did to Hollywood executives thinking that is more important.

As for people who think Die Hard is rubbish, well its a point of view. The same person might think Dirty Harry is a brilliant study in urban policing and paranoia which is it.

People who say that die hard is a crap movie go into it with the wrong frame of mind.
It is amazing for what it is but if you are going in expecting a movie that you actually have to think about you will be disappointed

Eurgh, I started thread hungover and was bored, silly mistake. :pac:

Anyways, I don't mean it in the sense of having opinions. Of course people can think what they want in regards to liking / hating films.

I meant more in the case of genre-defining films, or films that changed the course of the Hollywood machine that get easily dismissed by the general public.

Obviously I didn't mean that with Cliffhanger or Arnie's films (well.........bar a few of his big ones) I was just expressing a point.

Aliens is a true classic! If a someone says otherwise they probably ain't a "film buff"

Putting Die Hard in the same bag as Twilight s ridiculous, to say it's a crap movie is also ridiculous, it's completely engrossing and bruce willis is at the top of his game, he's not the best ator in the world but when given the right material he's great, he also has great charisma and screen presence like all good action stars do. Twilight is vampire movie/love story, I have seen countless vampire movies and love stories that are infinitley better than twilight, but I've seen very few action movies better than Die Hard. Hell, the the relationship between McClane and his wife is much more compelling than the one in Twilight!

They didn't compare Twlight with Die hard. Someone said the girls have the "teen prom" vamps while the fellas have Die hard, which this person happen to think was crap. He wasn't making a direct comparison.

Yea but the point I was tying to make is that Die Hard is pretty damn good as far as action movies go, where as Twilight is pretty damn bad as far as teen romance/vampire movies go. Now if he had said maybe XXX starring Vin Diesel it might have been a fair point. I'm pretty sure a lot of girls like Die Hard too, at the end of the day there's no such thing as chick flicks or guy flicks, just good flicks and bad flicks. Know what I mean?

Die Hard movies are all good fun, and I think they have aged well compared to some other action movies of the time.

Alien is a complete classic, like Aliens too, after that things get a bit iffy

TBH I would regard both Die Hard and Ailens as classics.

I think both films are perfect examples of their respective genres.

Die Hard cant be considered as anything less than a classic. Its my Christmas Eve tradition, every year for the past 15 years I crack open a few beers, turn off the phone, and watch Die Hard, it wouldnt be Xmas without it :D

I do this this too every December, for me it isn't Christmas until i see the rolling credits and hear 'Let it Snow' blasting as John and Holly drive off in a Limo!

This film sparked several great genres and sequels of one badass, flawed hero against a smooth organised, well equipped villian. Films like Air Force 1, Cliffhanger were refered to as Die Hard on a plane or Die Hard on a mountain. Willis and Rickman were outstanding and the film packs more laughs in it than some comedies i've seen.

Twlight is porn for teenage girls. Die Hard is movie classic that has aged well, can be enjoyed by all sexes, young and old.

Also the thread title is out of context, i feel it should be changed. I love this movie so much it is nearly offensive for me to see the title when entered this page. People can have their opinion about Die Hard being overrated, dated, unrealistic but it is anything but crap!

Now I have a machine gun.

    Ho ho ho.

it's just not Christmas without Die Hard.

Last Christmas I've actuall begun a new tradition of watching all the Die Hard films over one of the days around Christmas. Looking forward to it this year

If a film has that sort of effect on viewers, where they ritualistically watch it for a number of years and consider it to be part of a tradition, it cannot be considered as anything less than a classic

Seems im alone so far in this one, but never liked the Die Hard films at all. IMO a right time, right place kinda film has turned it into this cult classic amongst some. I knew what type of film to "expect", as some have given as a reason why people mighn't like it, and I still didn't like it. A villain with a weird, easy to remember and easily quotable name along with over the top dialogue a good film does not make.

I expect the backlash, so let it rain :P

i agued with the OH about the merits of Twilight Vs. Die Hard. I came to the conclusion that aswell as being the greatest action movie ever, Die Hard is actually a better love story than Twilight too.

Twilight - Constapated looking vampire meets moody bi-polar teenager, watches her sleep at night, his family nearly kills her to drink her blood, not very romantic. Ok, he saves her from gettin raped/killed by humans, which are lesser beings to him, not that big an effort really.

Die Hard - A cop visiting his wife in LA to try and make their marriage work has to kill a building full of "well financed, and very slick" terrorists armed to the teeth in order to save his wife's life. In the process, he gets shot, his feet cut to shreds by glass, jumps off a building, and gets the crap beaten out of him. Thats a lot more romantic IMO
