W124 part II - Update !!

    Hi guys,

Thought I would start a new thread, just as a follow up on this one....

Picked up a '95 W124 auto last week after a few days of looking - It was either going to be a w124 or a BMW e34.

SO... when Limerick man wasn't looking ............ :D:D

    On a serious note:
The car has covered 140k and just passed the NCT a few days prior to sale. Being a W124 it has received treatment for rust -> It had both wings replaced, a full respray with a zinc primer, prior to paint.

Engine and gearbox are good and changes and kick-down very smooth. I will get it serviced - cooling system checked and get all fluids changed etc. etc.

However they are a few issues (Nothing major, she is nearly 16 after all !!)
*Sunroof wont tilt, but slides ok.
*Crap radio reception aeriel not extending fully
*Need to get a spare set of keys - remote fob not working.
    *Center console lights out
    *Few scuffs to be sorted
    *Needs a good Valet (Interior)

No big plans for her, however as with LM, im looking out for a set of AMG monoblock alloys, smoked window tints and lower it a bit. (Not into modding cars at all but I think its obligatory with a black W124 ) Im also going to keep a look out for a new interior / Leather seats as the drivers seat has some wear on it.

I'm addicted to it and jump into it for no reason other than to go for a spin

Its going to be my daily for the summer and the Passat is going to be parked up :D:D

Looks clean. These seem to be catching on here.

So are you another auto only person? - I can't understand the big issue people seem to have with manual W124s.
I've only briefly driven a manual one and never an auto.

Dunno, slushbox just seems to be the way to go on a Merc in my eyes too.

My main car is a manual and always have had manuals. I have driven lots of autos through the years and I do like them in bigger engines.
Its nice to be able to 'waft' into and out of Dublin city center -> manually changing gear every 5 seconds is just a pain :D:D

    It is ;)

Think you need a big engine to really appreciate them, i have 2 and love the smoothness. My SL will still hit 60 in a shade over 6 seconds, not bad for a 2.5 ton lump.

You might not need one in Kerry, but they're very useful when you live in Dublin's urban traffic.

True that. Autos are better for day-to-day driving, unless your daily commute is from Ballyvourney to Macroom, in which case a manual is probably better. If you know that road you will know exactly why; if you don't then this is a good approximation: http://tinyurl.com/25zq95y :D

Older Merc Manuals have long throw gearlevers, a horiible feeling clutch pedal and on top of that suffer a lot of driveline wind up. Combine all this with a typically stiff(as Standard) throttle pedal and a foot operated parking brake making these yokes a real pain to drive anyway smoothly. Auto all the way with old mercs ... opposite with BMW 's

I knew that was what you bought :P Looked very nice in the add! Did he barter any bit on the price?

What ever you do, do not go for 18", 17" would be 20 times better! 699 new for the 17's! Or alloy-wheels.ie can do them for 140 a wheel without tyres IIRC.

Best of luck with it :D

Thanks LM, Yep got it for a bag of sand :D .. (Worthy of the barginomics thread !!!)
Doing some serious looking out for monoblocks, ringing the north etc. most places cant seem to keep them in stock !
Popped up to keith in discount tyres and quoted IIRC 850e for 17's with dunlop boots, so will see what happens...

Did you shift your own one ?

Ah ya it's sold but I still have it!

IN planet auto below he'll do them with budget tyres for 699, I was watching his calculator and the 18's were costing 90 a wheel, i'd say you'd buy the 17's handy enough! Put the tyres on them yourself!
