Clipon aero bars

    Hi Folks,

I'm going to get a proper bike fitting, and have been told I should get some clip on aero bars before I do. I've been looking online and it seems there's a few different styles, and I was wondering what (if any) impact the style has for tri (olympic, him and im distances)?

Basically there seem to be flat ones with a bend at the end, ones with a kink in the middle but which continue flat, and ones that connect the two bars together.

Given I'd be looking for something adjustable (so someone who knows how it *should* fit can change the setup), how appropriate would something like either of these be?

    Cheers!

    Extensions come in various forms:

    * Ski or J bends: Most common, i find them quite comfortable. They aren't the slowest in the wind tunnel but down the bottom. I used a set of these in IM Austria this year.

    * S-bends: Getting more common. Come in various versions of the drop from top of s to the bottom of the s. Fastest in the wind tunnel. I have a set of hed aerobars, used them for years but never got them set up on my cervelo for Austria. I find I pull back on the s-bends and use this action to get more power. I was concerned I'd overcook the hills with s-bends too. I aim to switch to these once I can be bothered changing all my cables. Can be a little uncomofrtable on the wrists.

    * Lazy s-bends. - most of the benefits of the s-bends but more comfortable. If I ever fit my hed bars I intend to get a lazy s bend extension and do some testing to see the difference between s and lazy s on CDA and power production.

    * Straight - look super fast. In fast are very slow comapred to the others. Not great comfort wise for long distance either.

For someone looking at IM, and assuming a clip onto a road bike, I would go ski-bends.

I like the Oval brand of clip ons

Was only asking this earlier on the cycling forum but are there any issues re fitting them to a standard road bike, just IIRC someone mentioned before about needing a certain diameter clip ons to fit onto the handlebars

Do i need 26 or 31.8mm for a regular road bike (giant model)

Depends on the bars? Are they stock and what model?
