Where to mount SatNav?

I've been using my Garmin Nuvi 310 for a while without mounting it, and just following the voice instructions, but I think they are not sufficient without looking at the screen (e.g. a series of right turns, and you are told to turn right in 350m).

Where is the most suitable place to mount the Satnav? The Garmin Nuvi came with a windscreen mount but I heard that these advertise to thiefs that you have a satnav.

From a safety point of view, is it better to place it to the left or right of the steering wheel (right hand drive)? My instinct tells me the right hand side so it won't obstruct my view but the cigarette lighter is in the centre of the car so I don't want any cables dangling over, etc.

    Sorry for the trivial question.

Mines on the right hand corner of the windscreen , seems less in the way.

I modified mine and stick it in the dash over the rev counter

Definitely the right hand bottom corner for me. Least obstructive to the view and right at your fingertips when you need it. I wouldn't put it in the dash myself for fear of having to change address etc while driving and turning and getting your hand caught while needing to turn, then having to turn back to release your hand to turn it even more, by which time you could be in the ditch :o

There should be some kind of trim you can run the cable along and then just tie up the excess. If you're worried about thieves, I guess you could unmount the cup every time you leave the car. I leave my own mounted but I never leave the GPS in it anyway.

Yup - right hand side of the windscreen for me too.

Run the cable over the steering wheel, any excess gets tucked in to the cowling (if that's the right word for it) that enables the adjustable steering wheel to move forwards and backwards.

In some cars the cable does occasionally brush agaisnt the left knee, but it's never dangersous.

I leave my cradle in place as the car is either on my drive, or parked at work, or I'm driving it. Can't remember if the 310 is one of the older ones like mine where the power goes in to the cradle, but if it is you can just un-mount the cradle and leave it dangling in the footwell, out of sight.

I have mine in the centre vent (left) in an air-vent mount, bought from e-bay for a fiver. It attaches and comes off easy enough.

Left hand side up on windscreen.

Take mount off and use a 'wet-one' tissue to rub circular mark off windscreen if you are that worried.

I take the unit with me when i leave the car.

I do exactly the same when parked up.

When I had regular GPSs I had them on the airvents or the window.
Now with phone I just stick it in the dash, like this. Works well as I have a silicone protective case around it which is non-slip.

That's not me in video btw :D

How do you find that? I was thinking of getting one but it looks very hard to see compared to a bean-bag mount on the dash?

ya its grand unless there is a very bright sun directly behind you but even at that its not bad.

I mean in terms of seeing the maps, i'd be concerned that i'd have to look completely away from the road to see them.

sorry. its not too bad. voice instructions are very constant coming up to a turn etc. your eyes wont be on it anymore than one mounted on the screen. its never bothered me... if i was in heavy traffic i would rather be looking at the road than the satnav regardless of where it was mounted!
