I am trying to find a short story which was on the Intermediate or Leaving Cert English prose syllabus in the mid seventies and wonder if anyone might remember the author or title

It was about a group of schoolboys who'd taken a day off to pick potatoes. One of them intended to use his wages to buy a pair of red socks which he was convinced would make him irresistible to women.

    Ring any bells?
