Hurling Qualifer/All-Ireland draws

So the draw for the remainder of the Championship takes place tomorrow. In the qualifers we have Antrim and Tipp from phase 1 and Offaly and Dublin from phase 2. Assuming Antrim and Offaly can't meet each other again there's no need for a draw here.

    Antrim vs Dublin
    Tipperary vs Offaly

For the quarter finals, teams that have already met will be kept apart. This will only occur if Cork and Tipp are both quarter finalists, as are Offaly and Galway.

Who they play in the semis is a bit confusing. In the past the Munster champions would always play the Leinster finalists or whoever beats them, and same with Kilkenny and the Munster finalists. But last year they decided to get rid of the "whoever beats them" part and instead pair them as to avoid repeat matches. This part will become more clear once we know the quarter final pairings though.

Is it an open draw for the quarters with teams who have previously met kept apart or what's the story?

Galway can't play Offaly. That is the only team we can't play. If they lose its any Provincial Loser vs Qualifier

    Its all insane.

Offaly cant play Antrim in the qualifiers cause they already met them in the Leinster Championships, but Carlow played Laois in Leinster and again in the qualifiers.

Also why do the draw for the QF's before the last round of the qualifiers are played? Play the qualifiers then do the draw, at least then its easier to know if teams need to be kept apart or not.

AFAIK the losing Provincial finalists are kept apart in QF's anyway

if we assume that Tipp get the better of Offaly then Cork has to be drawn against Dub/Antrim in QF if they loose today.

Makes a joke of it. If Cork win today they are in S-F but if they loose they are as good as in it anyway !

Whereas Waterford has no such (previous meeting) protection and has a 50-50 chance of drawing Tipp if they loose today

First team out of the hat gets home advantage I imagine.

not for this round i believe... might be wrong though. thought it was a neutral venue, both were thurles last year from memory, and we cant play there it being home advantage. looks like portlaoise i would think.

They should get rid of who ever wins Munster and Leinster gets into the Semi final, it is pointless and stupid and adds nothing to the championship. We had 4 quarter finals for two years and it was good.

I can predict that Tipp and Dublin will get the home draw. They will get a better turnout in Dublin and Semple Stadium is the bigger venue.

Both games are being pleyed on the 25th of july i think, Would love it to be a double header in thurles but it will more than likely be a double header in portlaois

i stand corrected, just heard on the radio that its a nuetral venue, almost certainly portlaoise according to the radio. but there saying its on next weekend??

That's correct, qualifiers are on next weekend with the quarters in 2 weeks time.

why the f... do dublin get a home game... and the tipp v offaly game gets moved to Sunday, in a neutral venue.

The GAA have a lot to answer for!

Antrim get the raw deal again.

    Grow up!!

What do they have to answer for? Not giving Antrim home advantage? Lets take to the streets....

Would you prefer both games in Portlaoise?

BTW Dublins home ground is Parnell Park.

This way gives Dublin GAA fans a chance to see both the hurlers and footballers, much better than having them in different venues on the same weekend.

im sorry but i think its very unfair on Antrim why should the two games be put together to help Dublin this would not happen for Offaly Galway Cork or ammmm Kilkenny lol

Apologies, twas a bit of a lunchtime rant on my part. Sorry if it caused offence.

for the record, i do think it should be a double header in portlaoise, if Tipperary were not in the mix it would most certainly be in thurles.

the idea that a venue less than 2 miles from Parnell is neutral is nonsense!

This not is not anti-dublin, i would feel the same if it were on in casement park. i have often supported dublin in the hurling, and gone to games, having lived up here for so long.

my rant was mostly about the fact that the saturday game has been refixed to sunday, throwing out previous plans, but sure what harm eh!

You are wrong there if it was Offaly against Dublin we'd just as likely have to play it in Dublin.

well not kilkenny as we're unlikely to be playing both championships on the same day.

I remember Cork playing a football match against Kildare on the same day as the all ireland hurling semi final against Kilkenny to accommodate Cork GAA fans. It meant a very long day as there was a minor match before that. I had to get in for 11:30 to watch the minor and not get out until about 6pm even though I had no interest in the football.

I still thought it was the right decision as it would have been unfair for Cork fans to have to play on consecutive days.

I don't see what the problem is for Antrim fans, surely portlaoise would be just as far as Croke park, and get to see Dublin v Armagh as a bonus!!

Likely to be Dublin & Tipp coming through although Offaly will test Tipp

So now we know. Assuming Tipp beat Offaly tomorrow we'll have:

Cork vs Antrim (winners face Kilkenny)
Tipp vs Galway (winners face Waterford)

If Offaly win tomorrow we'll have:

Cork vs Offaly (winners face Kilkenny)
Antrim vs Galway (winners face Waterford)

They got rid of the rule where the provincial finalist or the team that defeats them plays the winner of the other province. They got rid of it last year so it is an open draw so you could get Cork v Waterford in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Nope. You can't have a repeat of a provincial final in an All-Ireland semi final, ever. All they changed last year was to switch it around so that, if a provincial runner up loses in the quarters, they try to ensure repeat games don't happen. Cork will beat Antrim for sure, which means they HAVE to stay on the other side of the draw, giving us the winners of the Galway game.

According to this, provincial finalists will be kept apart.

So at present, the championship will play out as Daysha outlined.

    Kilkenny v (Cork or Antrim)
    Waterford v (Galway or {Tipperary or Offaly})

Not necessarily because (as Daysha said earlier) if Offaly beat Tipperary tomorrow the Quater-Finals will be:

    Kilkenny v (Cork or Offaly)
    Waterford v (Galway or Antrim)

But if Tipperary beat Offaly then it will be:

    Kilkenny v (Cork or Antrim)
    Waterford v (Galway or Tipperary)

Either way we are going to have 2 cracking semi-finals.

Was just about to edit that post but you've saved me from having to do so!

I imagine Tipp will come through tomorrow which would set Cork up to play (and probably easily beat) Antrim, and a mouth watering 1/4 final between Galway and Tipperary which I honestly couldn't call.

I believe Kilkenny will be delighted to get Cork (after comments from some Cork players after the strike last year, particularly Donal Óg in his biography) and I'd expect a fired up Kilkenny to sail through.

Kilkenny v (Waterford or Galway or Tipperary) in the final. Each of those 3 in the bracket have an equal chance as each other in my opinion but I'd say it makes no difference who plays Kilkenny in the final as rather frighteningly they still look as hungry and as good as ever.
