I'm looking for an Automatic commercial 4x4 for mainly on road usage and occaisional towing. I've narrowed it down to A 08 santa fe or a 07 touareg 3.0. I was set on the santa fe but am tempted by the touareg but I'm a bit afraid of the VW producing big bills (any VWs I've had in past were far from bulletproof)

Has anyone experience of the two?

go for the touareg with out a shadow of a doubt, santa fe isn't even in the same league. it wont be half the jeep for towing as the dmf are terrible in these.

Get the 2.5 touraeg. The 3.0 V6 had a lot of issues.

but the 2.5 drives like sh*te, would add the Kia Sorento into your consideration, lots of automatics about, low range gearbox, brilliant for towing and lots with leather and all the bits about

Neither of them. I would go for a Toyota Landcruiser as its a real 4WD with excellent build quality, and the market is full of second hand ones for great prices now!

I know but i didnt want to say the 2.5 was ****e as well.:o I know a few lads with them and were very disappointed. If the op dont mind the badge i would go for the santa fe or as you said the kia. I seen the new model sorento and its not bad at all..... OP could you stretch the budget to a audi Q7..

    I second this.

You will not find a better 4wd that also offers a reasonable amount of comfort and plenty of power.

second the Q7, I have one, I looked at all the contenders before buying:

    New x-drive bmw x5
    RR Sport

    etc etc

Q7 for me was just miles ahead.
