Would a full length dress be the expected choice for a lady over 50 at a black tie wedding?

No, definitely not! I was at a black tie wedding a few years ago, and the ladies wore a huge variety of outfits: typical wedding dresses and suits, skirts and tops, middle length dresses, etc., but as far as I can remember (and judging by the photos) I don't think one lady, young or not so young, actually wore a long, full length dress.

It was an afternoon wedding (ceremony at 15.00, dinner at 18.00), so not sure if that makes any difference? However, from what I gathered, the black tie more goes for the male guests rather than the female guests. I wore a skirt and dressy jacket instead of a top.

just to throw a spanner in the works, i was at a blacktie wedding last year and all the women, without exception, were in full length dresses

I believe the rule of thumb is that if dinner is to be served before 8 cocktail length is appropriate, but after eight means full length evening dress.
