BBC golf coverage

For me its bliss to be watching coverage of the Scottish Open with intelligent and uninterrupted commentary by the BBC rather than the interrupted drivel that comes from Sky Sports and that numpty Robert Lee & co. Its also a nice reminder of whats to come next week during the Open at St Andrews with monster 10 hours of coverage and with a bit of luck some fantastic golf in testing conditions. I suppose some will either love or hate the BBC coverage but for me its a reminder of my young days watching the Open on TV with my Dad listening to and Peter Alliss and Alex Hay conjur images and telling stories whilst Calcavecchia, Hamilton, Duval, Tiger and more recently Harrington joined the elite list of major winners. I have to say Jean Van de Velde is doing a top job on course commentating too
Ah.....memory lane, when the chocolate on the choc-ice was thicker and the summers always seemed to be warm

+1 Its a pure pleasure watching on the BBC, makes a change from the camera switching over to a bush while the yanks take yet another ad break!!

Agreed. Only problem is they're only showing 2 groups.

Stephen Gallacher, a scot in a scottish tournament is in contention and they haven't shown him once.

    This thread pleases me.

Yeah gotta agree its so much easier to listen to and an absolute pleasure cutting out all the stupid adds, drives me nuts !! Nice to hear from the big easy also, he is a gentleman.

I think Peter Alliss & co bring class to the whole thing and clearly has genuine respect for all the players while Rob Lee cherry picks the players he likes and throws sarcasm at the rest.

Ernie Els was class in the box today too. The BBC's coverage is so much better when Sam Torrance ain't around.

+1 for Peter Alliss, Ken Brown and the rest of them. I liked the interview with Seve on over thursday and friday nights highlights programme.

Completely agree, this is the reason I'm looking foward to the British Open next week as the BBC coverage is miles better than any other golf coverage.

Torrance is terrible, as is Andrew Cotter. Take those two out and it's perfect.

I must be the only one not keen(being kind admittedly) on Peter Allis, just reminds me of John Motson from the BBC footy and I really disliked(being kind again) Motty.

I do agree re: Sam Torrance. Mind numbingly dull. Anyone here play the Tiger Woods games? Truly unbearable his commentary in that.

I wouldn't be a huge fan of Peter Alliss either - prefer Ken Brown. The bbc coverage is very good but I prefer sky(barring the ad breaks).

If the BBC could get Radar Riley on board it would be great.

Riley is a legend, he adds a bit of life to the coverage

No, I think he is very good at commentating on the course. Personal opinion, but I don't like Peter Aliss or Cotter or Sam Torrance. Radar does come out with some great one liners.

Who was the on course commentator today?

Was on the verge of shouting for anything positive Clarke did especially on the back 9.

Did any1 hear allis when the camera panned to a wee boy eating a huge burger? He was ther cheering him on as he went to take a bite! Then a brief pause. Then came out with "rite well we'll come back on the 4th of December to see how he's getting on with that"

Quality stuff. Made me laugh ha!

Wayne Riley on the BBC team would be good alright, funny man. I'm just hoping its not that twerp Gary Lineker in the studio again.

an improvement no doubt.... but shes almost as dull as andrew cotter. still, as long as they dont recruit rob lee again i'll be a happy bunny.

for a shot in the arm they should give murray walker a lash. that man could liven up mass! could you imagine him as a priest... sunday mornings would be some crack.

Must say their coverage of St Andrews this year has been excellent. The interviews, snippets on the course and history, etc. have all added to the event for me.

Been mentioned on the main Open thread but how well did St. Andrews look last evening - breathtaking!

That's an insult to Hazel. I like her, a very competent professional with a relaxed delivery and no cringe questions of the Rob Lee variety.
Cotter on the other hand must be the most tedious broadcaster in employment. He ruins the Rugby coverage as well when he's involved.

I'm really enjoying the BeeB's coverage, I've only recently gotten Sky HD in and have been going mad with the red button since Thursday. The only really comparison I'm guessing you could make would be with Sky Sports, they over-rely on the computer graphics and showing the line of the ball and stuff, I enjoy that, but it'd be out of place for the BBC I think.

The 1 thing I would like to see is distance let to the hole, but I'm really only nit-picking.

happy birthday Tony Kendle who ever you are......... all they need is Martin King
    for 4uck sake ditthering jibberish
and the usual Peter Alliss mutterings......."I say Sam these boys are holing some huge putts out there,I think they're holing them from further than I've ever seen before"........."nudge one up the fairway".....every time he's on......I suppose we'll miss him when he's gone

the bbc coverage is a class above. All they need is Wayne Riley and David Feherty for the on-course commentary who are great characters and always add a bit of colour. Have to say I find Alliss pretty bearable and anytime the camera shows the crowd you know hes going to come out with something classic.
