Looking to change my car for something newer and have seen a few good deals on 2008 Ford Mondeo 1.6 petrols. I've heard mixed reports about them, but just looking for feedback on what they're like in terms of mpg, road handling, performance etc. I know the diesels are a better option but they're out of my price range. Thanks.

My opinion is that a 1.6 maybe too sluggish for a 4 door saloon like that, Id be looking at a minimum of a 1.8 for a car that big

but others might have more wise opinions

I know someone who owns one and they are quite heavy on petrol and sluggish. Considering Ireland only got the 110bhp version on such a big and heavy car the mind boggles at what Ford were thinking. They are no longer sold here now thank God so while the intital purchase is cheaper than the diesel model they may be difficult to sell on down the road.

not worth. Go for 1.8L if looking for petrol.

    +1 on this

A 1.6 in that chassis size/weight will be severely underpowered. This will result in poor power/acceleration - making overtaking a near impossibility.

The fuel consumption will be higher than other 1.6 engines in smaller cars as the engine has to work harder to lug the car around - this extra effort required to move the car will result in increased wear and tear in the engine.

Short answer - go for at least a 1.8, better still a 2.0.

The current Mondeo isn't available in 1.8 litre petrol.

It's actually a very sweet engine. Best in class imo but to move a body that size it's going to struggle.

My dad got a savage deal on a 2 litre petrol one. Top spec with all the toys. He's getting 33 average out of it. Plus if you do small mileage it's a canny buy. He gets an easy 40 odd on a cruise. Plus it's a nice simple engine...

I have that 1.6 in the Focus, and even then its only 'ok'; miles better than the 1.4 of course, but certainly won't set you're hair on fire.

Transfer it to the mondeo, and I'd imagine you'd have the same effect as the 1.4 Focus.
