Hi guys, just wondering if anyone here ever had a bone graft done and how painful it may be? have to get one done next month to allow for an implant to replace a missing front tooth.

haven't had one done, but have seen one, and it was described as similar to an extraction. hope it goes well for you.

I've had this done. The procedure itself is absolutely fine. Afterwards I had some swelling for about 4-5days and a little pain for 2-3 days but it was nothing terrible and was easily kept under control by normal painkillers.

It's nothing to worry about. Hope it goes well for you. :)

As fonpokno said, procedure itself is painless, afterwards a little swelling maybe some bruising for 2-4 days. Very predictable and common procedure, more complex than routine dentistry but nothing to get worried about.

thanks for the replies guys. Think its just a case of sounding worse than it really is. taking a few days off work after it just in case, reckon eating could be a problem. will update after i get it done

right, im a couple of weeks on from getting the bone graft done. was frozen up for the entire procedure which lasted c. 45mins (under local anesthetic) with little/no pain felt throughout the op. in fairness, it is weird though looking at the surgery being carried out. The after-affects are the worst bit, bleeding for the first day occurred. facial swelling is the worst after affect and did have difficulty eating and talking properly. also on a course of painkillers & antibiotics throughout each recovery day. the swelling finally receded by day 5 but it took me over a week before i started to talk like my old self again:). the stitching came out after 2 weeks.

imo, u definitely need a full week recovery period, so i would advise taking that week off if possible. feeling fine now at the moment, just have to wait over 6 months for nature to take its course and get the implant done. hope its all worth it in the end!
