Ok - This is Week 1 of a new fortnightly challenge that we will run in the Arts and Crafts Forum.

So.. for Week 1 the theme is: Solitude

The Challenge is now open and will close on Sunday the 25th of July.
Please read the rules below before posting. This thread is for entries, comments on the entries and voting only - for discussion of the themes and general chat relating to the challenge - please go to the Challenge Discussion thread.

    Enjoy and off you go!
    1. Entries must be in by 2 weeks of posting the challenge theme.
    2. The entry submited to this challenge must be of your own personal work & creation. It can be in any medium which falls under the area of arts and crafts.
    3. No old creations. Only entries created with this challenge in mind should be entered. We want to keep this fresh and help get your creative juices flowing. There is no point in posting up old work as you are not really participating in the challenge fully. Photographs of all work submitted will also be date checked.
    4. Entries must be related to the given challenge. Any entries which are not related to, or which the Moderators deem were not created with this challenge in mind, will be deleted.
    5. W.I.P. (Work/s In Progress) can be posted in the Challenge Discussion thread.
    6. ONE entry per post, multiple images can be given to show different angles etc. If a user wishes to enter additional entries that is ok – but must be done in separate post.
    7. Constructive criticism is encouraged (but be nice about it), though if any poster is deemed to be excessively critical you will be warned in thread and posts edited by the Moderators.
    8. Explore the theme and have fun with it. Make sure to include a little bit about the thought process (inspiration, materials, etc.) which led to the finished entry – this is what will make sure that we know you have created this entry with the challenge in mind.
    9. In the event of a tie, the winner will be whichever entry was posted first.
    10. The next challenge theme will be chosen by the user who has the most thanks after their entry. (aka the winner). Remember no prizes are available for these challenges, just the fun of taking part! I hope you will learn from others techniques and appreciate the diversity of drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, fashion design, jewellery making, wood turning and numerous other arts and crafts which this forum hopes to encourage.

    How to Post

Images should be uploaded to an image sharing account such as flickr and the url then posted in thread. Images should be kept to 800px in length - this is a setting available in sites such as flickr (large size).

Any questions please post in the Challenge Discussion thread!

The theme is solitude, and to be honest I battled with it for a while. I'd a good idea of making a flower out of wood and placing it with a bunch of other real flowers but I couldn't get my hands on a suitable wood that would do the required thing.

I then began to think about the bits and pieces I make (bowls and jewellery). They always have a function and more often than not they hold things e.g fruits, keys or are worn. Always close to someone or some thing. Functionality was the key thing for me, this piece has no function .It just stands there on it's own, alone.

I was going to make it more appealing with nice details and possibly curve it but figured it would make it more attractive and thus less likely to be alone. To be honest I don't even like the piece, which in a weird way makes me happy as this piece is more than likely going to be forever more alone.

So yeah, hopefully you will like/dislike the piece. Comments and criticism welcome.

    Will.

It's my Dad's birthday next weekend and he's off to climb the Matterhorn, again. Always so nervous when he's away on these trips, but it's his thing. The solitude of climbing along the ridge of a mountain I can only imagine. Though going by the way his eyes light up as he tells us of his trips, that solitude sounds incredible. This painting is for him :)

Painted using acrylics and goache on acrylic paper.
