    hi all,
my machine recently died and now im in the market for a new desktop. I still have the decnt monitor, extrnal hard-drive, graphics tab etc etc... but was wondering what spec i should be looking at getting. My last was:
Pentium 4 processor, think it was around 3ghz
    1gb ram
    XP OS

... and it worked pretty well for about 6 years. so what do people advise before i make the comitment and purchase.

mine is not too far off your old one - P4, 3GHz, 2GB RAM. one reason i haven't upgraded is my scanner is SCSI and won't work on Win7. plus, the computer is still working satisfactorily.

Quad core Core 2 Quad (Q8300)
    4GB of DDR-II 800Mhz XMS memory
    Sapphire HD4870 graphics card
    2TB of storage
    Samsung T200 20" monitor

It's served me well for a few years now. It's overkill for photography alone but it's used for gaming as well which explains the high (for the time) specs.

I didn't have a lot to spend so I ended up getting a packard bell with a quad core 2.5 Ghz processor, 4GB of memory and a 640 GB HDD. Cost me about €450.

Actually people should check out the budget gaming rig thread here:
Skimp on the GPU and you can build yourself a decent machine for very little.
