Has anything other than a test card with Lyric FM ever been broadcast at 1080?

Hmm, seems a pity to leave it empty. I've love to know what RTENL actually have planned for it. If anything. This years All-Ireland final? They should try and use it as a taster, get poeple interested in this stuff for when they do finally launch.

There has been nothing broadcast in HD since the DCMNR trials a few years back. In all likelihood the HD testcard is just for the SaorView certification process of IRD's put forward by manufacturers, testing if they can successfully handle HD broadcasts and no odd behaviour occurs.

In the long term, RTÉ very much intend to make use of HD and since SaorView IRD's must be HD capable at a very minimum, it means they don't need the additional hassle and extra bandwidth in simulcasting SD/HD channels, they can simply switch their channels to HD only and shut down the SD stream completely. HD content can be broadcast natively where available and everything else can be upscaled. Viewers with a HD ready TV get the HD picture when connected via HDMI, viewers without simply get the HD picture downscaled to SD through Scart or RF.
