Newbie Q: Tipping and showing cards

    I played in real-life for the first time last night, and really enjoyed it. I have a couple of questions about etiquette;

    1) How much do you tip the dealer when you're leaving the table? (Like, what's an acceptable %?)

    2) If my opponent folds and I win the pot, is it considered polite to offer to show him what he folded to, or is it up to me if I want to show my cards?

    Thanks.

    Were you playing in a tournment or for cash?
    In a tournment its generally those who cash would throw something to the dealers. If not €10 or €20 would be always appriciated.
    For cash I would generally be throws the dealer 1 or 2 from 1 in every 2 or 4 pots i win.

    This is really back to play the player or the table in general.Use it to your advantage. Show big hands folded to get more respect for your raises. Show bluffs if you are getting too much respect.;)
    You are under no obligation to show. However at times of big decisions a player may ask "Will you show if I fold?" If you agree to show this generally both of you would show. Remember the rule show one show all. If you show your cards to a player beside you ,you are oblidged to show every player at the table.

    It was cash - I gave one dealer a €5 chip when I was leaving, and then the other dealer €4 on the way out. tbh, I didn't even know this was the norm, another guy at the table said it to me as I was leaving with my chips!

    Thanks for the advice. I showed my cards a couple of times when other players were genuinely curious (you know, trying to guess what cards I had) - I'll show my bluffs the next time... ;)

    Hope it helps. Welcome to boards by the way .{forgot my manners in my last post ;)}
    Are you from Dublin ? Where were you playing?

    Yeah, I'm from South Dublin. I was playing at Atari Casino in the square. I was too late for the tournament, but they had a cash game going, and I'd been wanting to play real-life for months, but never had the nerve (I thought I'd end up getting confused about raises etc. but the dealers were really helpful in that regard)

    just to add to koolkid...he only show big hands anyway.

    just for yourself so you dont get taken advantage off, for the first few months dont show any cards as players will judge you on what they see so only show when you have to. if you find a player is starting to call you alot show a few big hands AA, KK, QQ, AK etc... to confuse him

    with tipping it is totally up to you and dont let anyone force you into tipping. saying that its always good practice to tip. if you are playing cash tip a small % of big pots you win. then if you have odd chips leaving the table just give them to the dealers. most tips are shared amongst all dealers so dont worry about tipping every dealer. it maybe an idea to throw a spanner in the works an tip the dealer when you sit down or if you are running bad with cards...... i find it can help but i am MAD hence the name

    if your playing a tourney and cash out big tip the dealer say 5% they really do appreciate it and you would not win without them :-)

    Dont be showing your cards to anyone unless you have to. you might think your being friendly but there will be players there who will be paying attention and will be figuring out a way to beat you so dont give away more info than you need to. its up to yourself if you want to tip.

    Make them pay to see you cards, there is no good reason to show your cards ever, it's just giving free info to others or you'll just end up leveling yourself.
    As for tipping, wait till you're about to leave in cash games and if your up for the night then tip accordingly.

    Tip €1 any pot over €50 sounds fair. Maybe tip on smaller pots if your winning a lot.

    Yeah don't show your cards. especially if you have won the hand without showdown.

    Tipping - I like tipping if i am winning. I personally am a tight git when it comes to this.
    My favorite way to tipp is when i cash out and i am up, depending how long i have played is to take to the nearest whole ten.

    If i am up 159 then i take 150, if i am up 53 then i leave 3.

    Don't forget you are paying rake, but if the dealers are getting the tips then you should look after them.

    If you win a pot that feels big to you then tip 1/2 per €50
