Bmw gear stick

    Hi everyone,
    I bought a new leather case for my bmw 320 (e46) gear stick. Does anyone know how to get the gear stick knob off so i can change it. I read that you just have to use force to get it off but i dont want to damage the gearbox in the process. Anyone know for sure if this is the case. I tried taking it off last night but was afraid I was gonna do some damage so i stopped.
