SSH + Remote Access + Dynamic IPs -> Solution??

    I've recently started using SSH for connecting to my home PC when I'm away. It works well but I've the obvious problem where the router may re-sync giving me a new external IP.

    What's the best way of tracking changes in my dynamic IP?

    Most routers I've used support a dynamic DNS service such as dyndns.com so that would probably be the best choice. If your router doesn't support that then you would have to get a script for your PC to check its external IP periodically and update the service when it changes.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Would there be any risk in essentially feeding my external IP to a third party like dyndns.com or is that just me being paranoid.

    A script to monitor my external IP and email changes to myself might be a good solution.
    I'll have to do some research to find out how to do that.

    Thousands of people (or more) use services like dyndns. Your IP address isn't a secret (any website you visit knows where you came from). The only potential "risk" is that there's a permanent association between your IP address and your email address - but your ISP already has that info anyway.

    You really don't have anything to worry about on that score imho.

    I use noip. There's a deamon you download that just updates your ip with the server every X minutes.

    Very handy.
