    Hi,
How many people do you reckon play in opens without a GUI card/handicap, a lot of places dont ask for them espically in team comps and in a lot of places the computer to sign in is away from the desk where you pay, I presume they would check it you won a team comp. What got me thinking about it I saw a post on here that said something like, thinking of joining a club as i'm just playing a few opens at the moment, cant find it now.

I dont know the answer to your question, but you should be allowed play in opens without gui, just not eligible to win. The price differences can be huge between green fee and open fee.

Would have to agree with jim here. You should be able to play and not win. At the end of the day if the club wants the revenue, does it matter who pays. Would people reckon that the spaces are not free then for people who want to play and do want to compete..... I would not mind either way... get out and play and enjoy. I reckon it happens a good bit especially, as jim has pointed out, if the price difference is considerable.

It could easily be regulated. Say, no more than 30%of the spaces go non gui, or the spaces available on the two days prior to the event are fair game, its all revenue to the club. Plus good word of mouth advertising. Going into work and saying you played such a course and it was a great deal and in super nick does wonders for a reputation (and hopefully that clubs timesheet too).

    Hi,
As far as i was aware opens were for members of one club to try out another course at a reduced rate didn't think they were for cheap green fees.

Didn't know that one had to play in the competition on an open day. I know several lads who play open days without entering the competition. Some of these have handicaps, some don't

if they have a hcp they should enter their score as not doing so effects the standard scr,why don't they enter their scores?

,they're a decent way of getting cash in and giving out cr*p prizes ,hence quite a rare profitable exercise by the club,if it means floaters are playing in opens just for a cheap green fee i've no problem with that once they respect the course and don't turn up in tracksuits etc

Myself and a mate might meet up for a round 2/3 times a year and just play a fun match play for a teener to the winner and the odd closest the pin for a €1 type of thing. When looking for a half way point venue (live in different parts of the country) we would see if any club is doing an open comp to get a cheap round. It hasn't worked out that we've gone for an open comp for this. We both have GUI handicaps and if we had opted for the open comp it would have purely been for money and we wouldn't even bother about scores, it would just be fun matchplay at a cheaper price.

Playing a fun round with a mate in matchplay is very different to thinking you're way around a strokeplay comp - the card wouldn't be relevant to the handicap.... In fact, for a guy like me who plays so little competitive golf and as such I play no where near my handicap - it would be a 0.1 I shouldn't have gotten.

Before I joined my club I went there for a game on a Wednesday as thats they're open day. Starter asked me what my name was, club & handicap & I told him Id no club or handicap & I was told I couldnt play in the open. Had to pay 25e for a green fee instead. 10 euro more than the open fee.

Just wondering, would you give the person a nominal handicap then?

Same in most clubs AFAIK - if your not playing in the open comp then its same as a normal day and full price.

I've been doing the rounds of a few of the midlands clubs doing the open days just to try out new courses / change of scenery and every one of them have been busy. Timesheet was full up from lunchtime to 5:40 in moate yesterday.

No, why would you? They cant win so their score is irrelevant. Does not affect css or their own handicap. Just might give a handful of lads a cheaper round than normal. You never know, it could get the club some new members who like what they see.

I would have thought this was the norm no wonder so many opens are booked up if there are guys playing just to have a cheap green fee any time a mate of mine playes with us he pays the green fee and we play in the open. They are open comps and not open days if you are not playing in the comp u should be paying the green fee.

I don't think it affects standard scratch if they never entered on the computer in the first place. If they entered on computer and didn't return a card it's a different story. Many clubs don't require that you register on computer before your round begins.
Also, some clubs ask whether you want to enter the competition or not.....
