Golf Mk3 problem

I have an odd intermittant problem with my '95 Golf Mk3 1.4. Car runs perfectly then randomly cuts out and refuses to start unless push started or tow started then runs perfectly again for up to a week and the same thing happens again.

It also has refused to start on occasion (but starter motor turning and no warning lights) but then if left will just start working again as if nothing had happened and carry on for a few more days before giving me trouble again.

It seems to have got worse in the last couple of days to the point where I cant rely on it to get to work anymore so something needs to be done

Thing is im pretty skint this month so I really dont want to end up in a situation where I am spending loads of money getting various bits replaced and the car inspected for faults if I can help it.

The problem seems to be electrical anyway, I have seen the electrics die when cutting out before and a family member took it to a garage today and they did some tests and said its an electical problem related to either the Ignition, EPC, Coil or Distributor. But what they said was that since its a relatively old car the laptop diagnostics dont tell them that much and therefore a lot of stuff would have to be checked manually which would cost money.

Having googled the symptoms, this appears to be a common enough issue with golfs of that vintage and the most common answer is that it it either the EPC relay or the Fuel Pump relay but since the fuel pump appears to be running when the car is turning over but not starting (I say this from personal experience as I can hear it) it probably in fairness is not the Fuel Pump.

The problem is that as I explained earlier I'm broke and the garage are quoting me a couple of hundred quid just to inspect the thing to get to the bottom of what the problem is and I dont really have the cash.

Anybody seen this problem before? Would it be worth my while trying to get the EPC relay and either fit it myself or get a mate of mine who is a mechanic to do it and hope for the best? Any advice much appreciated!

EPC on a MkIII...? EPC is more MkIV.

I'd be inclined to suspect the hall sender in the distributor.
