What does "Conshine" mean?

In the famous "Do You Want Your Old Lobby Washed Down?" folk song, the chorus reads:

"Do you want your old lobby washed down, conshine
Do you want your old lobby washed down?"
She sighs every day as she passes the way:
"Do you want your old lobby washed down?"

What does "conshine" mean, does anyone know? Thanks :)

I always thought it was a name, as in "Con Shine".

Ah you could be right there. I saw it written as "conshine" and not "Con Shine". "Con" is short for the Irish name "Conleth" (or "Conláed" in Irish). Since the singer is Brendan Shine, perhaps Con Shine is a relative or whatever.

    Ok cool - thanks :-)

Yeah and while we're at it, what exactly is a Wonderwall?

The Gallagher's Shrine to the Beatles?.. it would have pictures of John and Yoko but with Yoko's head cut out and Liam's in it's place.

I've also heard it being short for Cornelius (common in Cork), Conrad, Conchubar and Constantine.

I always thought it as "sunshine"!.... a sweet appellation often used in Dublin. But indeed, why not ask Mr Brendan Shine?

He's being interviewed by Miriam O'Callaghan on RTE Radio 1 at the moment and confirmed that..

    1) It's not his song.. he learned it as a boy and it had been around for a long time before then, although the original version had "sunshine" instead of "Con Shine".

    2) Someone else (damn my memory!) sang it as "Con Shine" before he did. I got the impression that this was not long before he released it.

    3) Con Shine is/was a man from Cork.

    4) Having your "lobby washed down" is indeed a reference to oral sex :p
