Ok lads I'm going back to college in September to study engineering and Im just about to put in an order for a new 27" Imac.

My problem is that next year and the following years in college I will be using a programme called solid edge (cad style programme) As this programme is only for windows I will have to run it via parralels or one of these programmes. Has anyone any experience of running this programme on a mac machine? Will it utilize the full capabilites of the machine etc????

Any help will be appreciated as I really want this new Imac as I also do video editing and nothing can really come close..

    Darragh

I haven't use Solid Edge, but I have run some other heavy stuff like Visual Studio under VMWare.

I guess Solid Edge is a 3D program - you will need to make sure that VMWare or Parallel's supports your graphics card - if you're machine's any way recent it will.

    Otherwise you'll be grand.

I'd recommend using bootcamp, which comes with mac, to boot windows as start up disk when required. This will dedicate the machines resources fully to windows.

You should be ok. I used solidworks in college labs on fairly basic desktops a few years ago so you should be fine.

Then it should probably run OK in Parallels.

I run solidworks via bootcamp on my 24" imac and my macbook pro without any problems.
If it wont work via paralells it should work this way.
