Tracking the trail

no idea where to ask this but thought id have a go in here

was watching lost and a lot of the time when someone went missing they would end up having to "track" their movements through the jungle from stuff like broken branches the odd foot print and stuff like that was wondering how realistic is this? like in one instance sawyer went to get desmond from the well and he parted ways with the group for kate to say "follow us we will leave a trail"
is it as easy as that to find someone in a jungle? i know its a tv show but not every aspect of a tv show has to be fictional :P

I can do a track and trail alright to a certain extent- there are signs you can make with stones and twigs for people to follow.
Don't know if i'd be able to track someone through a jungle though like what they did in Lost.

It is a TV show so a certain amount of realism is tossed aside. Tracking is possible but not to the scale as shown in Lost.

Lost is hardly reflective of real life and what is possible in it, but bush craft is a thing that people do, I think...
