Looks like living 3 miles outside a large town is too far out for eircom and wireless broadband. Mobile signal is crap inside the house so mobile is out too.

It looks like my only option is a satallite connection which I know nothing about. A major con I know is the expense (€600 instillation ). Any insight would be appreciated. Anyone recommend a particular company.

    (Damn this backward country)

Seeing as you specify that the 3G signal is crap inside the house just wondering if you have tried using it outside and if so what kind of signal you get. Additionally have you tried it near windows in case you house has thick walls that are blocking the signal. The reason I ask is that it might be both faster and cheaper if you can get a signal outside or near a window to buy a 3G router and either an external antena if you can only get a signal outside or just position it near a window if it works better there. Then you could use WiFi to get the signal the rest of the way to your pc.

If you are in an NBS 'live' area you would qualify for a free install ( or €20) . It is the same package that costs €600 commercially.

What colour is your area on this map ??

Knasher, You give me a bit of hope. The walls are mad thick. Outside the signal is OK Not brilliant but better than inside. I am nervous about using mobile broadband as I don't understand the cost of downloading. Am I being daft?

Who would I talk to about external antennas and routers? The phone companies or a computer store?

To be honest if you can get anything at all from 3G, thats where I would be concentrating rather than satellite. You are going to have caps, and going over them is very expensive, but you have the same restrictions with satellite so unless you are in the middle of no where its not something I'd consider. Could you go to speedtest.net and post your results so we have an idea what kind of signal you already have (inside and outside if you don't mind).

I would be very doubtful that a computer shop would be able to do anything for you. I'm certain there are exceptions but generally people who work there aren't especially knowledgeable. You could try ringing your mobile provider and seeing what they say, but again chances are the person who talks to you won't be able to help.

If you are able to find a position in your house that you can get a good signal at, then you can buy a 3G router easily enough and set it up yourself and you should be good to go. Otherwise you will probably need to buy an aerial and mount it yourself. The main place I would look for this sort of information is boards, I'm sure there are technical people who have had the same issues and would be able to tell you where you can get the equipment you'll need.

Satellite Terminal (VSAT) setup was €10,000 maybe 9 years ago. It's a time consuming highly skilled install needing expensive test gear if done professionally. The actual hardware is a lot more complicated and expensive than other systems (Modem with separate 1 GHz Rx and TX coax, polarisation separation/combiner feed horn for LNB and BUC, The BUC is an 18GHz transmitter and up converter from 1GHz).

At €600 they could be making a loss, only recovered after a number of months.

You need to find a signal ( outside high up) and mount the "Dovado" unit mentioned in the thread up top in a plastic waterproof casing up there ( with power) . It then uses wifi to punch a signal into your house or you run a network cable in from it...and you can power the Dovado with the network cable too if you get a "midspan"

Emmmm watty and sponge bob.....I have no idea what you are talking about :o.

Think of a widow who gets bored out of her face once the toddler goes to bed. IE no technical knowledge at all.

Well, consider it if we ever have elections. The current Government created this mess where poor widows need to do Telecommunication Engineering courses instead of just ordering Broadband. :(
