Windows 7 USB issues.

I'm having a problem with my Canon MP640 printer / scanner. It worked as long as I've had windows 7 but a week or so ago it stopped working, the printer is switched on but shows as offline in "Devices and Printers". This seems to affect other USB devices also, my phone, gamepads etc. Keyboard / mouse seem to work OK. I am also having a problem where windows hangs on shutdown and nothing happens for 10, 15 or more minutes until I reset manually or occasionally it bluescreens..

Sometimes when I reboot I get a message that Windows Explorer has failed to start and is being restarted. Any ideas? All virus / malware scans are clear and I haven't installed any programs, apart from windows updates, in the last month or more.

Somethings not right there, but you knew that.

What is the nature of the Blue Screen error? What kind of code does it give you? It's more than likely the drivers, who is the PC manufacturer, and what is the model?

It's a self built PC, Asus motherboard P5NE SLI. I can't understand what's wrong as it was working fine. The problem seemed to coincide with windows installing a batch of updates but I can't be sure and when I tried to do a system restore that failed. I have now restored an image and all is working OK but would like to be able to fix it if it happens again. Not sure of the blue screen message, wrote it down and now can't find it.
