I would like any opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of getting triple glazing windows as opposed to double glazing.

    thanks

I have double glazed south facing windows and tripple glazed elsewhere. We can make slightly better use of solar gain this way and also reduce the overall cost of the windows.

i heard so many different stories on this we just decided we'd go with top quality double glazing. i can honestly say that not one salesman could give enough valid reasons for spending the extra money on tripled glazing. we bought the best double glazed frames we could afford. i think double glazing is excellent. from experience i'd spend the extra quid on putting in an air-tightness membrane and stick with double glazed.

    Hi there,

i think this is a simple case of cost now vs cost later ...

the difference between 2G and 3G in an average house is about 5%, less if you have now large units and more if you have alot of them.

A good quality 2G window should be rated between 1.4 to 1.6, this is for the test window supplied to the simulator or hot box test .. and not every window in your home !

The average 3G window should be rated 1.0 to 1.2, after this there are other options insulated frames etc all bringing the uValue down and the price up.

The simple question is this ... how long will it take to recoup the 5% overage in your window price from your fuel bills ...

This is very difficult question to answer accurately .. but, being very conservative, it is less then 8 years ... and how long are you planning to have the windows in your house ... definitely more than 8 years.

On last thought ... a well installed double glazed window is going to save you more money on your heating bills than a badly installed triple glazed window !

Mine are all triple, the difference was 10 euro per m2 plus vat, and I guessed that there would be less risk of summer overheating having triple on the south side, I had originally planned for double on the south side.

Internal comfort is apparently better with triple glazing as the inner pane stays warmer so there is no cold radiating off the window, should have less condensation inside the window too so the windows should last longer if they are timber.

Both myself/ wife agreed to get the structure, insulation and windows and doors right and see how the budget worked out for the rest, if we have to wait a while for an upstairs ensuite to be done its not a deal breaker.

Having said all that, a good double glazed window with good sirtightness and insulation will beat triple glazing with average airtightness and insulation every time.
