Lake Balaton/Budapest/Hungary

    Hey all,

Heading to Hungary next week. Staying in Budapest for a few days then going to lake Balaton for a week. Going with the OH and 2 kids 2-3 y/o.

I've been in Budapest a few times (although never up the Buda end :o) so I kinda know my way around and what to expect. I'm planning on taking the young lad on the Childrens Railway because he loves his trains - no surprise at his age - and maybe out to Margaret Island for the pools/baths etc. Anything else in Budapest I might be missing, especially from the kids perspective?

I'm sorted for accomodation so I'm interested to hear the views of people who've been down at lake Balaton - am staying in Siofuk. Is it more expensive than Budapest? What activities are there for the kids and in general any tips, hints, suggestions for the area. Appartently the wineries are cool but should I go with kids that kind of thing.

Also, I've booked a car through an agency and had to call the local company where I'm picking up to clarify charges and found out you're hit with an extra €3.75 a day tax just for renting it, that's €30 over the week! quite a bit considering it's a fairly cheap place to hang out!

    Any contribution much appreciated. :D

stayed in Siofuk 5 or 6 years ago.
Was expecting everything to be dirt cheap but it was pretty much the same prices as in Germany if i remember rightly.
So affordable, but not amazingly super cheap.

Couldnt tell you about the facilities for kids specifically. Want focused on that sort of thing back then!!
Theres a beach there that you pay a couple of pence to get into. Its well kept.
And the lake is quite shallow near the shore so good for the kids.

In the town itsself theres a number of restaurants and bars so you wont go hungry.
Maybe the tourist office website would give an idea on the nearby attractions that would be kiddie friendly?

i assumed it'd be a bit more expensive than Budapest alright. hoping that it's not too bad - recession with kids = budget ya know! it's not like it'll be mad nights out or anything so lots of wine and dinner in the apartment which should help.

as long as the beach is good that's half the activities sorted!
